With a great defense and a methodical offense, the 2021 Baylor Bears earned the best record in program history. A natural part of that success was scoring first on opponents. The Bears did it nine times in their 14 attempts and went 8-1 in those nine games.
The wins came against:
The Lone loss was to TCU.
The games where Baylor did not score first were Iowa State, at Oklahoma State, Texas, and Oklahoma. It is interesting to note that, similar to how Baylor was 10-0 when holding a halftime lead, the stretch of Texas, at TCU, and Oklahoma was very rough for the Bears. They did not score first or hold halftime leads in any of those three games. It is a mark of a great team to come out of such a stretch with a winning record like last year’s team did.
And let’s not underestimate the impact of scoring first for a defense-led team. While the Bears' offense was no slouch, Dave Aranda and Ron Roberts’ unit was statistically better. And it’s easier to play the game from ahead rather than chase it.
