WACO, Texas – The Associated Press named Baylor’s Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox All-Americans Monday afternoon after the post duo led the Lady Bears to a 34-1 record, a No. 1 national ranking and to their 10th regular season & Big 12 Championship tournament titles.

Brown’s selection to the AP All-America team is the third of her career after collecting honorable mention honors as a sophomore in 2017, a second-team selection as a junior in 2018 and second-team again as a senior Monday.

Thru the NCAA Sweet 16, Brown averages 15.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and shoots 61.1 percent from the floor. Brown will leave Baylor as the program’s all-time leader in field goal percentage, she ranks fourth all-time in rebounds and blocks while ranking fifth in double-doubles, field goals made, free throws made and sixth all-time in career points.

Monday’s selection was the 10th overall all-America selection for the Slidell, La. native, and the second this season along with a second-team nod from espnW.com.

Cox’s selection was the third all-America award of her career and second by the AP. She was an honorable mention selection last year as a sophomore and was also a WBCA All-America honorable mention winner last year.

The AP named Cox to the third team after an all-around season that has included 12.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.5 blocks and a 2.56:1 assists-to-turnover ratio, which leads the Big 12.

Cox was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season and passed her teammate, Brown, for third all-time on the BU career list for blocks late in the season.

Baylor’s pair of All-Americans will square off against Iowa’s Megan Gustafson Monday night in the NCAA Elite 8 in search for the program’s fourth berth to the NCAA Final Four. Gustafson was a first-team selection by the AP along with UConn’s Napheesa Collier, Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu, Louisville’s Asia Durr and Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan.

Votes for the AP All-America team were selected by the Top 25 voters and considered games and statistics thru March 11.

Congrats to Beatrice for honorable mention. How good of a team do you have when an All American level talent needs to transfer out to get playing time?

Also see that Beatrice Mompremier got an honorable mention nod as well. You are right that it shows how stacked this program is with talent.

I bet with we see Alexis Morris on this list in the future.

Y'all beat me to it about Beatrice.

Didn't realize that McCowan is from Brenham. How did aTm let her get away?

I believe the story on McCowan is that Vic Schaefer was an A&M asst coach, and he was recruiting her to A&M. He then became the head coach at MSU, and because of the relationship they'd built, she decided to follow him.

Interesting to compare AP 1st, 2nd & 3rd teams to 2019 WNBA Mock Draft

After watching McCowan in their loss yesterday, I can't imagine how she placed ahead of Kalani. Very little offense went through McCowan -- it seems she is simply there for rebounding and put-backs on the offensive end. Am I wrong?

Yes it is. They pretty line up, with one notable exception. If the All-America teams aligned with the WNBA draft projections, Kalani would be on the first team and Gustafson would be second-team.

I do realize that the criteria are a little different and should be. Being an All-American is more about your value to your team and your contribution to its success than about how good experts think you'll be at the next level.

And who is better than Lauren Cox?

Nobody is better because nobody else can do everything she does. She's an elite post player, but unlike all the other elite post players on the All-America teams, she doesn't play purely like a post player. She seems more naturally like a power forward who can also play center, but she also can do things that power forwards typically don't do, like step out and hit a 3 or basically have the offense run through her at the high post.

Kalani can't do that, and from what I've seen Gustafson nor the Mississippi State kid nor the Stanford kid can do that either.

I think there tends to be a bias in the selection of these teams in favor of seniors, which is understandable, I guess, since the rationale is that juniors will get another chance next year.

I noticed that the only other juniors on the All-America teams were Ionescu from Oregon (who obviously belongs on the first team) and Jackie Young from ND, who is on the 3rd team with Cox. All the rest are seniors.

Word on the street
.. Sabrina Ionescu may not come back in 2019-20 for her senior season in college.
.. Her birthday is 6 Dec 1997.
.. Ionescu turns 22 in the same calendar year that the 2019 WNBA draft is held.

From the link in your earlier post, I saw she is projected to be chosen first in the WNBA draft. That might be hard to turn down.

If she turns pro, I would think that Lauren Cox would be the preseason favorite for national POY in 2019-20.

Notre Dame's Jackie Young is the other junior on the top three teams, besides Lauren and Ionescu. During the N.D. V Stanford game, the announcers said Young might turn pro also.

If Ionescu goes pro, Baylor will be the favorite entering next season by a wide margin. Notre Dame, UConn, Louisville, Mississippi State, and Stanford all lose major pieces this year. Oregon largely depends on Ionescu, and losing her would be a major loss. Obviously losing Brown and Jackson will hurt, but we have experienced replacements ready to step up, unlike most of those other schools. No team has a core like Cox, Richards, and Landrum returning. Next year's defense may actually be better than this year's edition. I am very excited to see what the sophomore jump looks like for the 6 freshmen. If it is anything like what we saw from Moon and Juicy, then we will be the favorites for the next 3 years.
