The Dallas Cowboys had four players selected to the Pro Bowl. Here's a look at who was selected and who wasn't:

Tyron Smith, OT, fifth Pro Bowl: He missed two games because of a groin strain and has been bothered by back, hip and now a knee injury that could keep him out of Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. He has a career--high five holding penalties, but he remains the prototype at the position with his athletic ability and strength.

Travis Frederick, C, fourth Pro Bowl: This might have been Frederick's best season. He has become one of the best centers in the game and he rarely makes mental mistakes. He has the physical traits to get to the second level, which has helped Ezekiel Elliott, Alfred Morris and Rod Smith have success running the ball. He has also done a solid job in pass protection in breaking in a new left guard in Jonathan Cooper.

Zack Martin, RG, fourth Pro Bowl: Martin has now made the Pro Bowl every year he has been with the Cowboys, putting him on the same track as Hall of Famer Larry Allen, who made the all-star game in each of his first seven seasons in Dallas. Like Smith and Frederick, he is considered by many to be the best at his position and he will likely become the highest-paid guard either in 2018 or 2019.

DeMarcus Lawrence, DE, first Pro Bowl: He picked the right time to have his best season with him set to be an unrestricted free agent after the season. His 13.5 sacks are the most by a Cowboys defender since DeMarcus Ware had 19.5 in 2011 and the first time a Cowboy had double-digit sacks since 2013. He entered the season with nine career sacks and had at least one sack in each of the first seven games.

SNUBS

Chris Jones, P: He is just 26th in average (43.8 yards) but he is ninth in net average (41.7) and he has allowed the fewest punt return yards of any regular punter through 14 games (55). He has just three touchbacks and 20 of his 56 punts have been fair caught. He had a Pro Bowl season.

True, the combine and individual work outs as well as pro days and interviews can change things a lot...and teams lie.

Ezekiel Elliott made his much-anticipated return to the practice field on Wednesday, although the Cowboys were without five other starters.

Tyron Smith, La'el Collins, DeMarcus Lawrence, David Irving and Anthony Hitchens all sat out of Wednesday's outdoor practice, as the Cowboys began their preparations for their Christmas Eve game against Seattle.

Four of those absences were expected. Smith and Hitchens were both injured in last week's win against Oakland, and the Cowboys are monitoring their situations as the week goes on. Collins has yet to miss a game this season, but he has been battling a back injury for the better part of a month and has missed several days of practice in order to manage the problem.

Irving suffered a concussion in the Week 13 win against Washington, and Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he once again won't practice Wednesday while he recovers. The third-year defensive tackle has not practiced since Nov. 28.

Lawrence's absence is a bit more unexpected. The fourth-year defensive end was named to his first career Pro Bowl on Tuesday evening, but he hadn't been listed with any injury coming out of Sunday's game. More information should be available when the Cowboys put out their Wednesday practice report later in the afternoon.

As for Elliott, it looked like business as usual for the All-Pro running back. Elliott returned from his six-week suspension on Monday morning and Wednesday marked his first opportunity to practice since coming back.

NFL Network's Jane Slater reports Cowboys LT Tyron Smith is dealing with a sprained knee. Luckily his ACL and MCL are both intact. Smith couldn't finish Sunday's game in Oakland and looks questionable at best for Week 16 against Seattle. Byron Bell would fill in if Smith can't go.

Todd ArcherESPN Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texas -- Truth be told, only Chris Jones knew he would fake a punt late in the third quarter in the Dallas Cowboys' 20-17 win against the Oakland Raiders Sunday.

It was not a call OK'd by Jason Garrett. It was a scenario special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia went over but the ultimate call was Jones'.

"I didn't know," said safety Jeff Heath, who was the personal protector on the punt team. "I don't know if anybody knew."

That's part of the genius of the fake punt. The Cowboys had the ball at their 24, which is not exactly prime territory for a fake. It was fourth-and-11, which is not exactly the ideal yardage either.

But when Jones saw the Raiders' alignment pre-snap and then saw two players loop to his left, he took a chance he could break through the line of scrimmage and pick up the first down. Twenty-four yards later the Cowboys had a first down and ended the drive with a Dak Prescotttouchdown on a scramble.

The score was tied 10-10 at the time. The Raiders had the momentum after a scoring 10 points in the first nine minutes of the third quarter.

"All of that plays a factor, but we work on everything," Jones said. "So that just happened to be what it was."

And what about the consequences if he did not make it?

"Just got to live with it," he said. "Take it as it comes."

For competitive reasons, Jason Garrett did not want to get into too many specifics of the call. Maybe it's because he wasn't so sure it was coming. But did he like Jones' decision?

"It's a long discussion, about when you like fakes," Garrett said. "It's a nuanced discussion. Sometimes when you think it's safer to have a fake typically they are not quite as good."

It was the second time in two seasons Jones used his legs to convert a fourth-down fake into a first down. He had a 30-yard run last season against the Philadelphia Eagles with the Cowboys trailing 20-10. They would come back to win the game in overtime.

There was a difference in that fake and this one, however.

"We called the one in Philly," Heath said. "We didn't call this one."
