Maurice Hurst cleared to play, will work out at U-M pro day
Mar 22, 2018

Wolverines defensive tackle Maurice Hurst, a potential first-round draft pick, has met with cardiologists at the University of Michigan and Harvard, and they have cleared him to resume playing football, a league source said.
Hurst will do a full workout at Michigan's pro day on Friday.
Hurst was diagnosed with a heart condition at the NFL combine and did not work out with the other defensive linemen.
This is not the first instance in which a college standout has been diagnosed with a heart condition.
In 2013, an echocardiogram on Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei detected a heart condition. A medical recheck showed there was no dysfunction, and Lotulelei was eventually drafted in the first round by the Carolina Panthers. He signed a five-year contract with the Buffalo Bills last week as a free agent.
Does he go in the 1st round or the 2nd round is the question

As of this AM from OverTheCap, NFL cap is $177,200,000. Cowboys have the third least cap room at $5,205,722 in space, same in effective cap spasce for 61 players. They are currently carrying $14,842,671 in dead money. That could rise quickly if Dez/TWill is traded or cut

NFC Stuff from PFT - Giants are considering RB Saquon Barkley at #2. Thats nutz. If you're picking that high, you get the second best QB (or maybe THEIR top one). You have a QB on his last legs...

Linebacker-needy Cowboys showing interest in former Texas star Malik Jefferson
BY CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

It's no secret that the Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a linebacker early on in the 2018 NFL Draft, set for April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium.

With Anthony Hitchens gone in free agency and questions surrounding the health and durability of Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith, the position remains a huge need even after the signing of free agent Joe Thomas on Wednesday.

One area prospect to keep an eye on is former Texas star Malik Jefferson, who played in high school at Mesquite Poteet.

Unlike the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys did not do a formal interview with Jefferson at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month when Jefferson wowed with a performance as strong as any linebacker in the draft.

But interest from the Cowboys seems to be picking up as Jefferson had an informal meeting at the team's headquarters at the Star on Tuesday, according to a source, and could return for a visit and/or workout in early April when national visits and Dallas-day workouts are conducted.

Jefferson, who trained at APEC in Fort Worth under Bobby Stroupe, was projected to go in the second or third round of the draft before the combine where he wowed.

His time of 4.52 seconds in the 40 yard dash was third best of all the linebackers. His 27 reps on the bench press were second best. He was fourth in the long jump and vertical jump. And he was as fluid as any linebacker during on-field drills.

Athleticism has never been an issue for Jefferson.

The key is finding the right position for him and allowing him to develop.

He played weakside and middle linebacker at Texas and also rushed from the edge.

His weakness is pass defense, according to scouts.

But his athleticism and ability to run to the football is elite.

Jefferson could be seen as a potential replacement for Lee on the weak side.

Jefferson played three years at Texas before declaring for the draft after earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior when he notched 110 tackles, including 10 for losses, and four sacks.

Good economical moves by the Boys and now other than Safety and LB, they don't have a must draft area to me. Best way to go into the draft!

Is it? Is there any production behind these signings or can we expect more of the same from our free agents?

I still like Byron Bell over Chaz Green as a backup OT. Green cant play LT. Bell is at least average on both sides. Green is signed at $705k in 2018. Bell is FA. Not sure about dead money cutting Green but I doubt it would be much.

Since Cameron Fleming is in the fold, he would appear to be a cut above either one. Maybe cut Green, dont sign Bell - and see how Jaron Jones, our Notre Dame 2017 practice squad guy has developed.

OT and OG are kinda weak in this draft after the first few. Not sure its a good one for us unless we grab one in first two rounds.

The production is there and yes this should avoid the need to reach in the draft.

Cowboys Expected To Sign Marcus Martin
March 25th, 2018 at 8:15am CST by Rory Parks
It looks as though the Cowboys will be further reinforcing their offensive line, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets that the club is expected to sign free agent offensive lineman Marcus Martin. It was reported earlier this month that Martin would be visiting the Lions and Cowboys, and he ultimately chose Dallas.
The 49ers selected Martin, a USC product, in the third round of the 2014 draft, and he spent the first three seasons of his career with San Francisco. He started 14 games in 2015, but he managed only four appearances (two starts) in 2016 before landing on injured reserve. The 49ers placed him on waivers last offseason, and although he was claimed by the Browns, he never suited up for Cleveland.
Still, he is just 24 years old and is capable of playing both guard and center. He will work as a quality reserve for a Cowboys line that just got even stronger yesterday with the addition of offensive tackle Cameron Fleming.

Martin didn't play a down for the Browns last year, the dude was inactive all year...how can you say that is an upgrade from Cooper.

And I quote:

" The 2014 third-round pick out of USC spent the first three-seasons of his career with the 49ers, including a 2015 campaign where he started 14 games. However, the lineman only played in four games (two starts) in 2016 before landing on the injured reserve. After being waived by San Francisco last offseason, he was claimed by the Browns. He ultimately didn't take the field for a single game for Cleveland."

Really not a good indicator. Dallas had nobody (Chaz Green?) at OG. Cooper was signed as a last career gasp for him.

If there was one position that Cleveland might have led the NFL in, it was at OG.

Oh by the way that article has Dallas as an honorable mention with Cooper and Clearly.

Looking at his resume before last year. And comparing that to Coopers. Coop was a total failure until a couple of games toward the end of the year. The fact that Dallas didnt care if he left says volumes. It will be interesting to keep an eye on him this next season

Mike Mayock top five safeties:

1). Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama

Fitzpatrick is the perfect example of what safeties will be required to be in about five years. The NFL is quickly evolving to a place where your defense needs a safety who can play a linebacker position during passing situation, as well as play slot receivers or tight ends. Fitzpatrick can do all those things. He struggles as a deep safety, and he needs to get a little better awareness, but those are things he can easily develop. He can also command a locker room.

2). Derwin James, Florida State

James is a physically dominant player. He has all measurables to be one of the best safeties in the NFL. The only knock draft evaluators seem to have on him at this point is he could still develop into a better coverage and run stopper in the NFL. Basically, you just have to wait for his final form to show up in a season or two, which doesn't feel bad at all. Like Fitzpatrick, he can also easily fill the up close and personal safety role.

3). Ronnie Harrison, Alabama

It is rare you see two safeties from the same school so highly regarded in one draft. One of the major knocks against Harrison is that he wasn't really the leader of the defense. He more came in and handled his work, which allowed Fitzpatrick to run the show. Still, his physical ability will easily see him go early in this draft. He has a knack for finding the ball in the running game, and he isn't afraid to lay the lumber on a guy. If you factor in his athleticism, you could see him reaching the same level of play as the two safeties who will be drafted before him.

4). Jessie Bates III, Wake Forest

Bates is a great coverage safety, and he would probably be viewed higher in any other safety draft class. He has incredible instincts and ball skills, but he really lacks that tackling ability teams are looking for more and more. Odds are he will end up as being more of a deep safety early on in his career while he works on that.

5). Justin Reid, Stanford

Reid doesn't have the same size as the safeties before him, but he could still end up being a valuable contributor in the NFL. He played deep safety and the slot for Stanford, and he could likely be plugged right into that role in the NFL. He doesn't like any sort of athleticism that would hinder him there. The major issue teams will have with him is his ability to contest jump balls with bigger receivers. That is something opposing teams will likely target, and he may always have issues with that..

Could he be an Vet Minimum, one year guaranteed, make good for future, situational pass rusher?

Redskins VP Doug Williams said the team is moving on from free agent OLB Junior Galette. That appeared to be the case after Washington withdrew their contract offer last week, but Williams confirmed it in an interview on Sunday. Playing for the first time since 2014 because of back-to-back torn Achilles, Galette only recorded three sacks last season, but he did create consistent pressure. He would be a good get for a pass-rush needy team.

giants would be screwed if ODL wasnt on the field:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports contract-year WR Odell Beckham "will not set foot on a field without a new contract." Beckham is scheduled to make $8.459 million on the fifth and final year of his rookie deal. Following a season ruined by injury, the receiver understandably wants more security, but it is unclear if the Giants are willing to offer it. On Sunday, owner John Mara refused to rule out trading Beckham while saying he is "tired of answering questions" about the receiver's off-field behavior. While it would be a terrible move for the Giants, a Beckham trade cannot be ruled out at this point.

Idk what to think of this dude. I really don't.
At the annual NFL Owners Meetings, Giants owner John Mara stated he "can't answer that one way or another" when asked if he foresaw a scenario where Odell Beckham didn't play for the Giants next season. "We're certainly not shopping him if that's what you're asking," Mara continued. "But again, when you're coming off a season where you're 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn't say that anybody is untouchable." Although any trade scenarios are likely overblown, what is clear is that the Giants front office has dwindling patience for Beckham in the wake of his viral video that surfaced earlier this month. Beckham is due $8.459 million in the final year of his rookie deal this season and it's possible long-term negotiations are stalled further if Mara's patience has grown thin.

Broadus on the new guy:

Scouting Report: Cowboys Getting A Smart, Experienced Player In Fleming
Monday, March 26, 2018 11:43 AM CDT
By Bryan Broaddus
Football Analyst/Scout
@BryanBroaddus

Name: Cameron Fleming
Position: OT
College: Stanford
Height: 6-5
Weight: 323
Draft: 4th round in 2014, selected No. 140 overall by New England

Games Studied: 2017, vs. Philadelphia (Super Bowl LII), Jacksonville (AFC Championship Game); regular season vs. Pittsburgh

Report:

Despite his size, Fleming plays with some initial quickness. He shows some real lateral slide and range. Nice lower body flex.

He has the upper body strength to hold his man in place, but he also has the hands to end up on the outside of the frame. His contact balance tends to come and go, but his ability to adjust saves him.

He will duck his head when he makes contact to slow down the rusher. That causes him to become a little over extended. In two playoff games against Jacksonville and Philadelphia, it was speed that gave him the most trouble. He gave up a sack against the Jaguars.

Body control can be all over the place. He's not on the ground a lot, but he has to fight himself to keep that from happening. As mentioned, his recovery is good as a pass blocker.

Plays with intelligence. I didn't observe any blown assignments or busts.

Given the Patriots' offense, the majority of his plays are pass blocks. He will need work on run blocking, especially cut off and reach blocks. I'd like to see him work better on the second level.

There were snaps where his positioning wasn't good. He'd overshoot and then have to try and rally back. He was a much better player against power, such as the game against Pittsburgh, than he was against speed which is what both Philly and Jacksonville used.

Physically, this is a good looking player. Not sloppy at all. Played like La'el Collins early in the year. I feel like he can get better.
