I think I would have to be pretty darn happy with the rest of this draft too.

Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were not tempted to move up at all in the first round even as Derwin James fell closer to No. 19. Leighton Vander Esch was their guy and did not give any thought to moving down either.

Leighton Vander Esch on where he plays with the Cowboys: "They can throw me anywhere but I feel like middle is my premier position." He lauded Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith and said he could not wait to get on the field.

For the 12th time in the last 14 years, the Cowboys' first pick has been among their pre-draft visitors. Leighton Vander Esch was at The Star earlier in the month for a visit. The only picks not to make a visit were DeMarcus Ware (2005) and Morris Claiborne (2012).

I think LVE also gives us a cushion in case Sean Lee gets hurt again. The kid is tough as nails but you simply cant overcome some of these injuries.

And we THINK Jaylon Smith will be healthy. He really started looking sharp toward the end of the year. Doesnt mean he will be what he was. What he's done is actually pretty darn amazing.

LVE can play every LB position. I would also think he would be in the DE rotation when we go to 5-2 setups. Plenty big enough for occasional duty there

My biggest three surprises from yesterdays draft?

NOLA giving up two #1s for Davenport., RB Rashad Penny going in Rd 1 and the Pats passing not once, but twice on a QB, specifically Lamar Jackson.

Nick Eatman mentions Dallas had Rashan Evans waaaay down the board past LVE. And no other LBs close to Evans. So LB was LVE or bust at 19

Not sure that the Cowboys see WR the same way we do as fans. I think they see the cupboard better than last year. Deonte Thompson is a step up from Brice Butler and Hurns may be better than Dez at this stage of Dez's career.

Thompson runs better route than Butler, Dak is sure to have more confidence he will be where he is suppsed to be, something Butler would seldom be. Butler had 15 catches last year, Thompson had 38.

I really like Hurns game. And he's tough as nails (remember him crawling off the field last year so Jags wouldnt be forced to take a TO? Missed games after that with his leg injury).

"We feel like he can play both the MIKE (middle) and WILL (weak side) spot, and in our defense he could play the SAM (strong side) spot as well," head coach Jason Garrett said. "Best suited probably for MIKE but has the physical traits to play WILL. Often times we're in situations in base defense or in nickel defense where we're playing three linebackers for those two spots.

"Having a front-line player, also having depth, being able to play the different situations, he fits all of that stuff." Jones compared the 6-4, 255-pound Vander Esch to former Cowboys starter Rolando McClain, a big middle linebacker who had the range and instincts to make plays moving forward or dropping into coverage.

"That's why we pictured him as a unique fit for our philosophy on defense," Jones said.

Vander Esch refuted published reports before the draft regarding potential medical concerns, saying he had no neck or stinger issues at Boise State. Jones said the Cowboys' medical grade on Vander Esch gave no concerns about drafting him in the first round.
