This just in. Sean Lee blew out his achilles tendon getting up to go take a piss at 4:30 a.m. this morning. Hopefully he can recover from this setback and come back and contribute later in the season for the Cowboys. Yes, this is fake news. Sean is spectacular when on the field, but he is just not durable or dependable. I wish him the best this season.

Cowboys waiving TE Gathers, former Baylor basketball player
APAug 5, 2019 at 8:33p ET

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) The Dallas Cowboys are waiving tight end Rico Gathers, ending three years of steady progress with the club for the former Baylor basketball player who chose to pursue pro football over a shot at the NBA.

The 25-year-old Gathers' status on the roster became more tenuous when 11-time Pro Bowler Jason Witten came out of retirement after a year in broadcasting. Gathers also missed time at training camp with an ankle injury before Monday's decision.

Gathers hadn't played football in a decade when he decided after four years in the Baylor basketball program that he would make himself eligible for the NFL draft. One of the best rebounders in Big 12 history was a long shot to get taken, but the Cowboys grabbed the 6-foot-6 Gathers with their final pick in the sixth round in 2016.

After a year on the practice squad and a season on injured reserve because of symptoms from a concussion, Gathers made the team last year. He played in 15 games with four starts, catching three passes for 46 yards.
Gathers is still facing a one-game suspension to start the season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. He was arrested on a marijuana possession charge last year.

Witten, Blake Jarwin and Darwin Schultz are likely to make the 53-man roster. Second-year player Codey McElroy is the fourth tight end in camp.

Cowboys will keep just three tight ends now. They kept 4 last year. Does this mean 6 receivers? Possibly opening door for Jon'vea Johnson, Cedrick Wilson or Reggie Davis

Suspended Cowboys DE Randy Gregory has yet to apply for reinstatement but still hopes to play in 2019.
Per PFT, Gregory has "every intention of filing his petition and returning this season." It had been reported that Gregory would apply for reinstatement last month. Why he has yet to do so is unclear. PFT reports Gregory is "doing well" and "continuing to "do everything necessary in his treatment and personal responsibility plan."

1010 XL's Hays Carlyon reports TE Geoff Swaim is Jacksonville's "unquestioned starter."

Signed to a two-year, $6.6 million contract in March, Swaim's only competition at the position is arguably third-round rookie Josh Oliver, who recently suffered a "significant" hamstring injury in camp. Jacksonville dealt with numerous injuries to their tight ends last season, but could simply lean on the 28-year-old free agent acquisition this upcoming year if he's able to stay healthy. Swaim ended last year on injured reserve (wrist surgery), but not before he logged career-highs in targets (32), catches (26), receiving yards (242), and touchdowns (1).

I believe yesterday was the day for Zeke to step to the plate and honor the contract he signed, wasnt it? He lost a NFL year toward FA?

Wonder what you could get for a two time NFL rushing champ in his prime? 2 #1s and a couple of mid rounders with a RB in trade? Starting S thrown in?

We have to come up with the money to sign Byron Jones and in two years Smith.

Right now we are about $23mil under the cap. If Zeke gets a bunch up front.... we are going really heavy on the Offense. Current numbers

  • Offense: $108,117,116
  • Defense: $79,810,068
  • Special: $4,595,000

Media messed that one up pretty bad. Since Zeke's will be picked up, he didn't have to show up on the 6th. (Something like that). But the Cowboys can choose to fine him his game checks if the hold out lasts into the season.

Winning by cheating is just as impressive as winning fairly, probably even more so. Your opponent was better than you in every way, and you beat them with your brain.

That rule provides that he would lose a season towards free agency if he didn't report by August 6. But that rule only matters if Zeke sits out the season and the Cowboys choose to play hardball with him. If they agree to a contract, it would extend beyond year 5 which is the year after which he is eligible for free agency. So free agency doesn't matter in that scenario (He's signed so not a free agent). Same would be true if he sits out the year and they sign him after next year. Essentially, he would have to sit out the next three years for the rule to have any impact. I guess if they trade him, the new team would acquire his contract and the rights thereunder and could enforce the extra year before he's eligible for free agency. But I can't see a team trading for him if there's a chance he sits out for them as well due to the that rule. In other words, he would tell the team trading for him "extend me or I'm sitting out."

At least that's how I understand it.

Zeke is on contract for a few more years so its isnt like LeVeon who I think refused a franchise tag and sat.

The Cowboys waived wide receiver Lance Lenoir on Wednesday. The receivers in Cowboys camp have been fighting for a limited number of spots all preseason behind Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Randall Cobb. Allen Hurns landed with the Miami Dolphins after also being cut by Dallas a few weeks ago.

While he occasionally showed some flash during preseason games, Lenoir spent much of the past two seasons on the Cowboys' practice squad, playing in eight total games. He had one tackle on special teams, and is still searching for his first career catch. The Cowboys signed Lenoir as an undrafted free agent out of Western Illinois in 2017.

The Cowboys also waived tackle Derrick Puni and signed tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty and tight end Marcus Lucas on Wednesday.

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones confirmed what many suspected: the team isn't exactly in active negotiations with Ezekiel Elliott over a new contract.

Jones said that the team's talks with the running back's agents are infrequent, but each side knows where the other stands.

"Very rarely," Jones told Rich Eisen on Wednesday's broadcast of The Rich Eisen Show. There's this perception out there about negotiations that there's these ongoing talks that go on hours at a time, and that's just not the case. You kind of set the boundaries of where you think it should be, and certainly they're all represented by very sharp people and they're trying to do the best for their client. You kind of sit there and you stew on it, you think about it, you're always trying to think of something that might bridge the gap."

Jones added that he doesn't blame the player for the holdout, and that it's the team's job to sort out how salary is distributed.

"We're going to exhaust all energy to get this done," Jones added.

Elliott is serious enough that he's already given up a year of credit toward free agency by failing to report by August 6. In fact, there is chatter that his season is in jeopardy if Dallas doesn't pay up. For now, the two sides are at an impasse, but if the stakes are that high, the Cowboys will want to get something done.

So I am going back to a note from earlier. What is Zeke worth in trade? Some other team without cap issues and no major stars to keep bucks for in the future?

What would the Raiders give up for Zeke? He is exactly what they need when they complete the move to Las Vegas (next spring I think) for PR purposes. They have their first which should be top 5ish, they have Chicago who will be in the playoffs, guessing 25ish. They also have 2 3rds of which one would come our way.

They also have 1st round pick Josh Jacobs at RB. Maybe their 1st plus Jacobs plus a 3rd for the 2 time rushing champ? Thier 27th pick was Jonathan Abrams, S. Maybe a package deal for both?

We have to come up with the money to sign Byron Jones and in two years Smith.

Right now we are about $23mil under the cap. If Zeke gets a bunch up front.... we are going really heavy on the Offense. Current numbers

Is Elliott being fined for holding out at this time? Or do fines kick in later? Not sure how that works.

And is RB Jay Ajayi still a free agent?

Tony Pollard tried not to make too much out of what it meant for the rookie Dallas running back with Ezekiel Elliott away from training camp while seeking a new contract from the Cowboys.

Drafted in the fourth round with the idea of possibly being a more potent backup to the two-time NFL rushing champion, Pollard has risen to the top of the depth chart if practices at camp are any indication. And the former Memphis running back has impressed the right people.

"One of the most exciting players to me of this training camp," star quarterback Dak Prescott said. "The things that he's been able to do running the ball, catching the ball out of the backfield. He's making plays. And he's really an intelligent dude."

Pollard has heard from Elliott since the Cowboys reported to camp without a key part of an offense that helped Dallas win two NFC East titles in the former Ohio State star's first three seasons.

"He's done a good job just texting here and there, telling me he's been getting good feedback about me and just keep up the good work," Pollard said.

As long as Elliott stays away, Pollard will have the chance to build on that good feedback, which he says is the product of something simple.

"Just picking up the offense on the go, fast," he said. "Just being able to play comfortable and play up to speed like I've been doing since college."

Pollard's most notable work at Memphis came on kickoff returns, and the Cowboys believe he has the build to make those breakaway skills work in the backfield. Since kickoff returns are less frequent because of NFL rules, there's also talk of Pollard returning punts.

So far, he's mostly just practicing catching punts. That could change at some point.

"Got to worry about him getting too much," executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said.

"Everybody wants him working on their stuff, whether it's special teams or offense. We've got watch his reps. He's doing a real nice job for us."

Pollard said he was a little overwhelmed at rookie minicamp , but not so much now.

"Now that I've been around the guys and been able to go over the playbook and things like that over and over, it's getting kind of easy," Pollard said. "It's a big difference, just from my confidence level and just trusting and
knowing that I know what I have to do, not being shy or timid about things."

When camp started, Pollard was behind Darius Jackson, a fourth-year back who finally got the first carries of his career last year in a meaningless regular-season finale with Elliott sitting after Dallas had wrapped up the division title.

By the second week, Pollard was rotating in with the starters. Now he seems to be the clear first-teamer as long as Elliott isn't around.

"He's handling a lot of information on the offensive side of the ball, on the running game, the variation that you have in the passing game, whether you're protecting or running routes," coach Jason Garrett said. "He doesn't look like he's not playing to his speed because he is thinking too much."

The way Prescott sees it, Pollard is doing plenty of thinking in the hotel adjacent to the practice fields in California.

"When we're in the offense, or in the offensive unit, or in the team meetings, anytime coach calls him out on his responsibility, without a hesitation he's getting that right," Prescott said. "That's what you want to see from a young guy."

Pollard is about to get his first chance to show his progress against an opponent in the preseason opener Saturday night at San Francisco.

"Just a chance to just be out there in a game, go after somebody else," Pollard said. "It's just a chance for all of us to show that."

With Elliott missing, Pollard has taken advantage of his chances so far.
