No word on Poe yet. Would love to get him so we can fill out the DBs in the draft

Also, would love to be a fly on the wall and hear what the new coaches feel about Trysten Hill. I would assume they talked to Marinelli. I mean, how do you fall asleep in a meeting when NBA Hall of Famer Isaiah Thomas is speaking?

He wasn't likely even born when Isaiah was playing not to mention one of his two college HCs wasn't too thrilled with him so there were some flags there.
That would be one of McCay's bigger busts along with Taco. Didnt Garrett make the final call on both of them?

Henry Ruggs is really intruiging to me. Could you imagine throwing in a 4.2 guy into the mix with Amari crossing under and Gallup under him?

1:12 p.m. Free agent defensive lineman Kerry Hyder is expected to sign a one-year deal with the 49ers, according to NFL Media and reports.
Hyder played about 40 percent of the Cowboys' defensive snaps last year, pitching in 19 tackles, 19 pressures and a sack as a reserve tackle and end.
Starting defensive end Robert Quinn and tackle Maliek Collins agreed to deals last week with the Bears and Raiders, respectively. The Cowboys have agreed to terms with veteran lineman Gerald McCoy.

The Cowboys are adding tight end depth in the second wave of free agency, agreeing to terms with five-year veteran Blake Bell on a one-year deal.
Bell, known as "The Belldozer" at the University of Oklahoma, was a quarterback and tight end for the Sooners. He has played tight end on NFL four teams since the 49ers drafted him in the fourth round in 2015: San Francisco, Minnesota, Jacksonville and most recently Kansas City. Last season he had eight catches for 67 yards in the regular season, as well as one catch for 9 yards in the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory over the 49ers. Over his five-year career Bell has 38 catches for 424 yards.

Both Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe received much higher grades than the 2019 Cowboys' starters, according to PFF. McCoy beat out Maliek Collins with 72.0 versus Collins' 65.7. Poe's 71.2 overall grade blew Antwaun Woods' 56.9 out of the water. The real difference was in run defense where the duo of Collins-Woods averaged a 61.2, while McCoy-Poe averaged 73.6. The Cowboys new coaching staff has committed to fixing the run defense, which is line one in Defensive Football 101. Without question, the Cowboys have improved their defensive tackle situation with the signings of McCoy and Poe.

From Brian Martin at BtB
Three One Year Rentals

I would be on board with Lawson and Njoku if they would take 5ths for them. Neither would be starters for us, but excellent rotational players with a shot at signing them after the season

Zuerlein was second to Maher in misses last season with nine, including six misses in the 40-49 range. But he has made 15 of 20 kicks from 50 yards and beyond the past three seasons and has one of the strongest legs in the NFL

Which is why I don't understand this move...I get that he is Fassel's boy but that should only go so far. Cobra Kai deserved way better than this.

The three-year deal comes with a reported $3.5 million in guarantees, whereas Forbath's one-year deal is worth just $1.1 million with very little in the way of guarantees.

Seems to me this pretty much eliminates competition in training camp

Bucky Brooks: Scouting Report on Dontari Poe

Bucky Brooks
NFL MEDIA ANALYST

(Editor's Note: The DallasCowboys.com team welcomes Bucky Brooks to the staff. Bucky brings a wealth of experience, not only as a former NFL player of five seasons, but also as a scout and on the pro personnel side for two teams. In the last decade, Brooks has worked in the media, including the NFL Network. Bucky will provide his own analysis and opinions of the Cowboys but also the entire NFL. Today, he breaks down one of the new free-agent signings in defensive tackle Dontari Poe.)

Name: Dontari Poe
Position: Defensive Tackle/Nose Tackle
College: Memphis
Height: 6-3
Weight: 345
Season: 9th
Games Studied: 2019 (Panthers vs. Tampa Bay, Tennessee, and Atlanta)

Overview:
Poe is a disruptive nose tackle with a game built on strength, power, and explosion. The ninth-year pro entered the NFL viewed as an athletic freak based on his size/strength/athleticism combination (see 4.89-second forty-yard dash and 44 bench reps at 346 pounds at the 2012 NFL Combine) and he's continued to dazzle with his explosive athleticism as a pro. Poe has 20.5 career sacks but is at his best occupying blockers at a run stuffer at the point. He is a rare find at the position as a 350-pounder with the size and strength to "two-gap" from a square position or attack as a one-gap penetrator playing on the edges of a blocker.
Poe bullies blockers with his strength and power, exhibiting an unstoppable bull rush move and butt-and-jerk maneuver. Additionally, he will combine a quick-arm over with an explosive first-step to slip through cracks at the line to meet ball carriers in the hole.

As a pass rusher, Poe is punishing pocket pusher with overwhelming strength and power. He routinely walks blockers into the lap of the quarterback utilizing a variety of power-based maneuvers to win against one-on-one or double teams at the line of scrimmage. Poe's persistence and relentlessness result in a number of garbage sacks when the secondary blankets receivers on the perimeter. Studying the game tape, Poe's stamina, energy, and non-stop motor stand out, particularly on his pass rush efforts. It is hard to find 350-pound defenders who play hard from snap to whistle while logging significant defensive snaps as a three-down player.
Although it is unlikely to see Poe reach double digits as a sack producer, he is a credible threat as a pass rusher and nearly impossible to contain as a run stuffer.

Strengths:
Run-stuffing defensive tackle with outstanding strength, power, and explosiveness
Dominant 2-gap player at the point of attack
High effort player with surprising stamina and endurance for a 350-pound defender
Disruptive pocket pusher as a pass rusher

Weaknesses:
Limited impact as a pass rusher
Marginal range as a run-and-chase player

What are scouts saying?
Poe is coming off one of his best seasons in 2020. He is an excellent athlete with outstanding strength and power. He is primarily a disruptive interior player as a run stopper but he can get to the quarterback and provide inside pressure. Poe shouldn't be judged by his sack numbers but he is a unique three-down nose tackle with athleticism and power.

How does he fit in with the Cowboys?
Poe gives the Cowboys a disruptive presence on the interior with the potential to play as a one-gap penetrator or two-gap force in a 3-4 or 4-3 front. The two-time Pro Bowler will join Gerald McCoy to give the Cowboys a pair of veteran beefy defenders with outstanding chemistry at the point of attack. Last season, the combination worked well with the Panthers, as they created opportunities for each other with their complementary playing styles. Poe's inside push and McCoy's movement skills disrupted opponent's blocking schemes and helped front seven defenders rack up negative plays on sacks/tackles for losses. With the Cowboys featuring swift linebackers (Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch) and edge defenders (Demarcus Lawrence) in the starting lineup, the insertion of Poe (and McCoy) on the inside should lead to more negative plays (sacks and tackles for loss) from a unit that should be more aggressive and diverse under defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

Bucky Brooks: Canady More Than Just a Corner

Bucky Brooks
NFL MEDIA ANALYST

Name: Maurice Canady
Position: CB
College: Virginia
Height: 6-1
Weight: 193
Season: 4th
Games Studied: 2019 (Ravens vs. Bengals and Steelers; Jets vs. Bengals)
Overview:

Canady is a developmental cornerback with outstanding special teams' ability. The fourth-year pro plays with great effort and energy while displaying improving skills as a cornerback. After starting his career on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad, Canady has become a dependable reserve cornerback and special teams standout. He is ideally suited to handle nickel or dime defender duties as an outside corner in sub-packages but he has logged significant snaps as an emergency fill-in in the starting rotation.

In man coverage, Canady is at his best when he utilizes bump-and-run technique. He displays enough patience at the line of scrimmage to effectively shadow shifty receivers down the field. Although he flashes a strong one- and two-handed jam, Canady primarily operates at a shadow boxer early in the routes. He generally maintains hip-pocket positioning but he occasionally loses his leverage and resorts to grabbing or clutching receivers to regain control down the field.

In off coverage, Canady relies heavily on a shuffle or "squat" technique to stay in close proximity to receivers. Despite winning his fair share of downs, the shoddy technique has put in bad positions and he is unable to recover prior to the ball's arrival. As a result, Canady allows a number of underneath completions in blitz situations due to his technique.

As a zone defender, Canady started to show a better feel for where he fits into the puzzle in coverage. With the Jets, in particular, he started to quickly diagnose route concepts before making aggressive breaks on the throw. He showed up quickly when the ball was thrown and wasn't afraid to mix it up as a tackler on the perimeter. In fact, Canady's aggressiveness as a hitter and tackler showed up in run support and in the kicking game. He files around to the ball with reckless abandon and his overall physicality stands out when reviewing the tape.

On special teams, Canady brings an aggressive approach to the "Gunner" (Punt) and "Vise" (Punt Return) positions. He wins with speed, aggressiveness, and physicality while also displaying dependable open-field tackling skills. Canady not only has a knack for getting ball carriers down with traditional wrap-up tackles but he will also chop down runners with cross-body blows.

Strengths:
Bump-and-run specialist
Dependable tackler
High effort player
A-plus special teams player

Weaknesses:
Unpolished technician
Ball production

What scouts are saying?
Canady is a smart player with intriguing potential as a developmental prospect. He's tough and physical with adequate skills in man coverage. Although Canady is a little undisciplined in zone coverage, he started to play better down the stretch last season when he locked in on his technique and played with more discipline. If Canady continues work on his coverage skills, particularly his footwork (backpedal/shuffle) while thriving as a "Gunner" (Punt), "Vise" (Punt Return) and a cover guy (Kickoff), he could emerge as a solid contributor as a third or fourth corner/core special teams playmaker.

How does he fit in with the Cowboys?
Canady gives the Cowboys an intriguing developmental prospect to throw into the cornerback rotation. He has the requisite size, athleticism, and speed to match up with bigger receivers while also developing a well-rounded game that could give him a chance to contribute as a nickel or dime defender. In addition, Canady's high-revving motor and energetic playing style should make him a standout special teams contributor as he emerges as one of the Cowboys' top playmakers in the kicking game.
