zack martin, tyron smith will do something in practice today. Probably not for Lael Collins, per Jason Garrett
Hopefully practice
Cowboys RG Zack Martin (concussion) is expected to practice Monday.
Martin suffered a concussion on Thanksgiving against the Chargers, but he appears to be moving through the protocol quickly. He still has some hurdles to clear, but this practice puts Martin on track to play Thursday.

I really dont get this. If they knew they like Rod Smith better, why not get a late round pick for McF before the trade deadline? Dude had 1100 yds in 2015 - elbow injury in 2016. nothing to hurt his legs.

BTW - I've seen very little from Rod Smith to convince me he's as good as, or better than McF

I just don't understand their handling of McFadden. Popular wisdom was that they kept him on the roster for the eventual Zeke suspension. But even after Zeke was suspended, they didn't use him. So what was the purpose for keeping him on the roster? And I truly believe the Rico concussion IR thing was a sham to keep him off the roster but protect him from being claimed off the practice squad. So why not just release McFadden and put Rico on the roster? Just bizarre.

The Cowboys are benching starting cornerback Anthony Brown for Thursday's game against Washington. Most of Brown's snaps will go to rookie second-round pick Chidobe Awuzie, who has missed six of 11 games because of a strained hamstring.

The Cowboys are also taking a long look at their safety play this week. Starters Byron Jones and Jeff Heath aren't making plays on the ball. The two have combined for only two interceptions and seven pass breakups in 11 games.

"When you don't do a million things on defense, you should be able to really get locked in and be physical," Marinelli said of his safeties. "Balls will come out when you're really physical. That's something we stress and it's from the guys we lost last year. Everybody understands what the standards are. So we've got to keep pushing that standard."

After a strong offseason, Awuzie appeared destined to eventually start for the Cowboys. But his hamstring injury in training camp lingered. The Cowboys put their faith early on with veteran Nolan Carroll at cornerback. But the Cowboys released Carroll by mid-October and started third-round pick Jourdan Lewis in his place.

The Cowboys have been pleased with Lewis, although he hasn't been as sharp in recent weeks. Lewis, too, had trouble keeping up with the Chargers' Allen on Thursday.

Jones said the demotion of Brown will give Awuzie the chance Lewis received earlier in the year.

"Chido has really been improving," Jones said. "It's been a frustrating year for him because of his hamstring injury. We really were conservative in terms of letting him get all the way back before we put him on the field. We really believe he's ready. He deserves the opportunity to get out there, and let's see if he can help us."

Too early to talk NFL draft? Nah. Here are the Dallas Cowboys' top 5 draft needs
By Jon Machota , Staff Writer Contact Jon Machotaon Twitter:@jonmachota

The NFL draft isn't for another 150 days -- April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium -- but with the direction this Cowboys season is currently heading, it might be time to start looking at where the biggest upgrades are needed.

If the draft was today, the Cowboys would be picking in the middle of the first round. Here's a list of Dallas' top five needs:

1. Defensive back: Cornerback and safety should both be on the board. Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis appear to be the future of the defensive backfield. The Cowboys used second- and third-round picks to draft them a year ago. But the group needs upgrades. The safety position should be wide open heading into the offseason. Byron Jones, a first-round pick in 2015, has had his share of struggles this season. He's best in coverage so there's always a chance he could be moved back to corner. No player on the Cowboys roster has more than one interception this season. Playmakers on the back end continue to be one of this team's biggest needs.

2. Linebacker: When Sean Lee and Anthony Hitchens are healthy and available, the group is in good shape. The problem is, Lee has dealt with injuries throughout his NFL career and Hitchens is about to become an unrestricted free agent. The Cowboys used an early second-round pick on Jaylon Smith two years ago. Smith hasn't performed like the player he was before the significant knee injury he suffered in his final college game. If the Cowboys don't believe he will ever return to that level of play, drafting a linebacker in the early rounds has to be considered.

3. Receiver: This likely means a wide receiver, but don't rule out a pass-catching tight end. Yes, I know that hasn't panned out for the Cowboys over the last decade. That doesn't mean you stop trying. Jason Witten signed a four-year contract extension in March, however, that doesn't mean he's guaranteed to play beyond this season. The Cowboys could use a deep threat receiver to take the top off the defense. There hasn't been much separation from Cowboys receivers down the field this season. Speed is one way to address that problem.

4. Pass rusher: You can never have enough pass rushers. If the Cowboys are drafting inside the top 15, taking one with their first pick is not out of the question. DeMarcus Lawrence is third in the league with 11.5 sacks. But he will enter free agency this offseason. A franchise tag seems like a good bet. Tyrone Crawford is under contract for three more years. David Irving will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. This is the best pass rush the Cowboys have had in the last five years, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be upgraded if possible.

5. Offensive line: The Cowboys have three standout offensive linemen and a fourth that has the potential to be on the same level. La'el Collins is under contract for two more years. Zack Martin is under contract for one more year, but he's expected to get a long-term deal this offseason. Why do they need another offensive lineman? Well, because they need depth. You've witnessed how bad things can get without Tyron Smith. He's dealt with his fair share of injuries over the last few years. Why not add another quality piece up front? If it's a high-round pick and it's a tackle, Collins could potentially be moved back inside.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is optimistic RG Zack Martin (concussion) will play Thursday night against the Redskins. Martin suffered a concussion last Thursday, but he was able to practice on Monday and "had a good day." He still needs to be cleared, but it looks like Martin is on track to play.

It's a good thing there's a roof on top of AT&T Stadium, because the sky is falling in Arlington, Texas. The Cowboys have dropped out of the playoff race in dramatic fashion since Ezekiel Elliott finally began serving his six-game suspension in November. After Elliott's final game, a 28-17 victory over the Chiefs, the Cowboys sat at 5-3 with a 49.9 percent chance of making the postseason, per the ESPN Football Power Index.

Three consecutive losses later, and the Cowboys are essentially playing out the string. FPI assigns them a mere 1.5 percent shot of making the playoffs. The New York Times pegs them closer to 3 percent, but the Times' projection still thinks they'll miss the playoffs 25 percent of the time even if they win out. (FPI also thinks Dallas' chances of winning out are a mere 0.8 percent.)

From Weeks 1 through 9, Dallas averaged 2.58 points per possession, which was the best rate in football. Since Week 10, with Elliott out, the Cowboys have averaged 0.71 points per drive. As you might suspect, that's the worst scoring rate any team has posted over the past three weeks. Dallas has gone from the top five to dead last in the past three weeks in touchdown percentage, turnover percentage and scoring percentage on a per-possession basis.

Cowboys declared WLB Sean Lee (hamstring) inactive for Week 13 against the Redskins. Lee doesn't seem particularly close to a return. Even with 10 days to heal up, we would consider him highly questionable for Week 14. Also inactive for the Cowboys are CB Bene Benwikere, RB Trey Williams, LB Justin Durant, DE Datone Jones, DE Daniel Ross and TE Blake Jarwin.
