Six ex-tcu players will testify that Gary Patterson abused them

Details of alleged abuse involving five former TCU football players have been added to a lawsuit accusing TCU football coach Gary Patterson and the university of a pattern of verbal abuse and a pressure to play despite serious injuries.

In a filing Wednesday, former receiver Kolby Listenbee added the stories of Lonta Hobbs, Ed Wesley, David Johnson, Stansly Maponga and Cameron White to his lawsuit against Patterson, TCU and former athletic director Chris Del Conte.

Listenbee claims there was a pattern of "systematic misconduct" at TCU before he enrolled there in 2012 out of Arlington Bowie.

The lawsuit, filed in Dallas County on Jan. 31, alleges that TCU football coaches prefer to "keep the diagnosing and treating of their players 'in house' with the TCU team physicians," according to the update. It alleges that TCU coaches believe the team physicians are easily manipulated to clear players for action when "an outside physician could not be swayed as easily."

"This is evidenced by TCU's lack of an orthopedic physician on staff nor any radiology equipment on campus unlike other top tier schools across the nation that have the resources TCU has," the lawsuit states. "The systematic scheme allows injured players to receive subpar treatment for their serious injuries, gives the coaches premature return-to-play decision when serious injury or harm could be caused, and creates an inherent conflict of interest."

TCU declined to comment on the new allegations.

The lawsuit, which is seeking at least $1 million in damages for Listenbee, alleges that Patterson and his staff "harassed, abused and humiliated many injured football players" in hopes that they would be pressured to return to the field before being fully healed.

Among the new allegations

In 2002, former TCU running back Lonta Hobbs was involved in a car accident in which he suffered a concussion and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. The TCU coaching and training staff persuaded Hobbs to return to Fort Worth from his hometown to obtain medical treatment. However, the lawsuit claims, Hobbs was never referred to a psychiatrist or radiologist. For the two months after the accident, Hobbs was "belligerent" and emotionally unstable. Despite showing signs of this instability, Hobbs was informed that his job would be given to a freshman if he did not return. Hobbs' premature return caused additional emotional instability and "physical unbalance."

In 2010, former TCU running back Ed Wesley was concussed in a game against SMU. Then team physician Dr. Samuel Haraldson refused to allow Wesley to return to the game because of the concussion. "Any loss of consciousness is automatically considered a concussion," Haraldson said to the media about Wesley's incident. "He had an unsteady gait and a few memory problems." The suit claims that Patterson "verbally accosted" Haraldson for not clearing Wesley to return to play. Later, Patterson told the Star-Telegram of Wesley: "He's fine. As far as I'm concerned he was fine 10 minutes after he got hurt. But it was good that we protected him." The lawsuit claims the incident reveals Patterson's insistence that players return to play despite their serious injuries. "Despite the audacity and publicity of the event, TCU, TCU Board of Trustees, and Del Conte supported Patterson and his actions."

In the 2011 season, former TCU football player David Johnson sprained his ankle. When he expressed concern about not being able to play because of the injury, the position coach stated: "In your career, you will never play at 100 percent. You will always be hurt. And if you can't do that, we don't have a place for you here." The player noticed this became a "common thread" at TCU, the lawsuit alleges: Players being informed by coaches that 'if you don't play this year, we have no use for you. Future potential means very little, and we may very well not have a spot for you next year if you sit out."

After the 2012 season, former TCU star defensive specialist Stansley Maponga was deciding whether to leave TCU and enter the NFL Draft prior to his senior year season. Patterson made it clear to the entire team that if Maponga left early, Maponga would not be allowed to come back to TCU to complete his degree in the future, would not be allowed to use TCU's facilities to work out, and that NFL scouts and coaches would be informed that Maponga had a poor work ethic and was soft.

During the 2013 season, former TCU wide receiver Cameron White was concussed during a game and was cleared to return to the field shortly thereafter. White was injured in a violent collision during the second game of the season against SE Louisiana University. White came off the field and told the training staff that "I don't feel right." Despite this information, the TCU trainers, including head trainer David Gable, cleared White to return to play. Upon information and belief, the TCU trainers were pressured by Patterson to clear known injured players. After the game, White's concussion was counted as the last one he could suffer before becoming "medically disqualified" to play football again. The player attempted to transfer to another school near his hometown but was blocked by Patterson.

Former assistant coach Doug Meacham, assistant coach Rusty Burns, several trainers, two TCU team doctors, TCU's Board of Trustees and the Big 12 Conference are also named in the suit.

Did Patterson put Boykin back in the 2013 game after the helmet-to-helmet hit Dixon was ejected for? Boykin was out of it for awhile after that hit, IIRC...

I keep wondering when they're going to replace Baylor in the Big 12-2? Should have let them rot in the MW....

Why the fyuck did we ever let them in again?

What the hell does that mean?
As opposed to TCU playing a man short until the player gets better?
This story seems familiar. Where have I heard it before . This couldn't possibly be about money?

During the meeting, one of the regents started crying and pounding on the table, saying "Not my Baylor," and "Why do we have to listen to any more of this?"

Sounds like Football to me....this isn't any different than what I and my teammates experienced while playing at BU for Teaff....you'll never play at 100% is an exactly true statement.

The Maponga deal makes no sense....recruiting success is fueled quite a bit by your schools #'s in the NFL

PTSD for a car accident?....I openly chuckled at this one....suck it up buttercup.

Playing injured happens all the time in football, I don't know that this is new or unique.

Patterson verbally abusing his players though... did they not know that before they committed? Just watch the guy on the sidelines and in interviews. It's pretty obvious what he's like.

I'm just curious to see if TCU will hire anyone to look in to the allegations or if they will go the route of saying 'this isn't what it looks like. We asked Gary and he said it's fine'. That worked pretty well for MSU and Tennessee.

I'm fairly sure 'the feds' will be looking for crimes, not Title IX compliance.

They are under federal investigation for Title IX violations and have been for some time, but the penalties at the end of those investigations are typically not much. Tennessee is also under federal investigation for Title IX problems.

Edit: (Sorry not trying to derail thread with an unrelated conversation that I'm sure has been had somewhere on the board before.)

The pussification of college football is under way.

What is wrong with you guys? It has to be juice box kids, social media, hurt feelings, entitlement, etc. Maybe it's the soft parents who will pull their kids out of one school and shop around until they find a school where they believe their kid will be top dog?

Everybody is looking for a damn winning Lotto ticket. Whether you are a talented college football player that was not quite good enough to make it in the NFL or a student that went out on a date and drank too much, lost her virginity, and did not get a call back the next day for a second date.

Everyone wants to blame someone else for their bad decisions. The entitlement mentality these days is just mind-boggling. Personal responsibility appears to be a thing of the past.

Wow!

If there's evidence that Patterson pressured or threatened trainers/staff to clear injured players then he needs to go.

Concussions are not something to ignore...and is an extremely hot topic in football right now.

Given his attitude issues and outbursts on the sidelines...it seems VERY plausible.

agreed! Football scholarships are year to year, based on grades and performance. They evaluate athletes all the time, if you don't produce some schools cut you off. It's a business now and it was then (80s)

This is partly to blame, but lawyers are also on the constant hunt for more business. Many are probably seeing universities as easy targets to get a settlement by the end. It's working 100 miles down I-35.

I can add that I spoke to the mother of a young man who was a starter at TCU but he got severely hurt at the start of his senior year. She said he loved TCU and even refused to let the medical staff cut off his jersey when he was being helped. What sent the mother in to orbit was that no one from the TCU coaching staff ever came to see him in the hospital. She finally had to go up to Patterson's office and demand he or a coach go visit her son. I was amazed that she still is a TCU fan. Family at TCU is a one way street once you get hurt and they don't need you.

I can't speak to their specific claims, but I know few universities that let their head coaches be the first one to greet a player after a serious surgery.

Patterson, being the loving coach that he is, is usually the person who the player first sees. And he is kind enough to tell him to get on the field or he will give their position away.

This is hardly a shocking story. It's gone on for a while, what's shocking is that the Star Telegram wouldn't cover it when they were first told of it. And TCU worked to sweep it under the ru g.

This site leaks private information to Baylor Regents and Administration

This wouldn't surprise me. It is not a stretch to imagine the culture Gary runs is 100% business and they really don't care about you if you can't help them win.

You would think recruits and parents would understand this before signing up for his program.
