Looks like this is getting close to done

This is weird....if true....gonna make things a little awkward in Morgantown

Matt Wells is a 44-34 over 6 seasons as Hc at Utah St. He had a 3 win season in year 4 but 10 wins this season. Seems like a mixed bag but overall just a little above avg.

Meh

Apparently a good recruiter with tons of Texas talent on his roster. What do we know about his style of play, will he challenge for Rhule type players?

Dana was smart in trying to leave, as this season was a perfect one for him to use to get a new, similar in quality job given how nationally relevant WVU was this year. However, that being said, he will not have a better roster at WVU than he had this season and he still lost at least 3 games (i.e. the bowl is still a potential loss and he's 1-4 as HC in bowls as a Big 12 HC), and, because that is the case, he will almost certainly turn in a few more middling seasons (5-9 regular season win) until he gets fired.

Seems like a really underwhelming choice in the aftermath of firing Kingsbury who replaced Tubberville.

They really seems to like making mediocre choices after so many stable years of competitive play under Spike Dykes and Mike Leach.

Spike and the Pirate are more the deviation from the norm at Tech, at least since JT King stepped down in 1969.

1970-74: Jim Carlen (bolted for South Carolina)
1975-77: Steve Sloan (bolted for Ole Miss) edited--see below
1978-80: Rex Dockery (fired; went to Memphis St, killed in plane crash)
1981-85: Jerry Moore (fired; went to Appalachian St, retired having won 3 1-AA national championships)

1987-2009: Pax Lubbocka
2010-2012: Tubby (bolted for Cincinnati)

You're right. He was one of Bear Bryant's early Bama pupils and the scuttlebutt at the time was that he would bide his time until Bear retired then return. Shock when he went to Ole Miss instead, where he was not successful, then disappeared.

Kingsbury got talent to Tech for heaven's sake such as Mahomes The talent for whatever reason didnt all come together and flourish under him however some of it transferred out like Brewer and Mayfield, werent they KK recruits?

22 years of competitive football in the recent past is nothing to dismiss though, you'd think that would've set precedent for higher standards when it came to coaching choices.

I mean, even under Sloan they had a really good team that featured Bill Parcells on the defensive staff in the late 70s.

I was citing them as examples. Someone tweeted Kingsbury couldn't recruit. I think clearly he can.

Just heard from a booster's son that it's a done deal. Matt Wells is the next coach at Tech. Making the announcement this evening and he's meeting with team at around 8.

More importantly, will he challenge Rhule's style of play on the field? Ie, will he beat us?

If they hire him.... Kind of a left field surprise hire like Rhule. I think if big 12 is sink or swim, the new TT coach will sink. But... you never know!

I don't know squat about Wells but it is apparent they already had a coach in mind before they fired KK. That's the way to do it if you're going to can a coach. Find a replacement before you fire him.

Wonder how long it will take for Wells to make them elite?

Matt Wells totally rebuilt Utah State's football program and has the skills and experience needed to succeed at Tech.
