Interesting to hear him breaking down some scheme. To get all his videos you have to cough up $24 though.

Aranda is the real deal. This is the best staff we have ever had at Baylor, IMO. He learned through COVID to be a Head Coach. He is smart, willing to make the right moves even though difficult, his heart and head are in the right place and he hired great recruiters.

We will have a top 3 Big 12 defense this year plus an improving offense all year. We will be competitive this year and look out for next year (2022).

I totally agree and appreciate your positivity. I think they will make us proud this year and confirm the wisdom of hiring aranda.

So if we are 10 point underdogs and lose by only 7 he's successfully defended the spread?

Time well tell. He's got 3 more years.

There could be 20 good markers and 2 bad ones. You always pick the same bad ones.

We've seen what happens to teams that are all defense and no offense. They don't win too many games.

We've seen teams that are all offense win 10 games a year.

If I had to pick, I'd choose offense.

It's ok to be defensively minded but not at the expense of all offense.

Id feel more comfortable of a video of him on how to execute the spread offense.

If Aranda stays out of Grimes' way, we've got a chance.

The too-obvious question:

Would Coach Aranda's schemes have worked against CAB's offense???

Discuss. (REALLY discuss, and don't hijack this with any pro/con CAB stuff!)

If he were allowed to use LSU's stellar athletes, then yes it would work.

Briles didn't run anything outrageously unique. He made really fine adjustments to player spacing (most notably extending the distance off the OL) that forced a defense to declare their intention early. That is, they couldn't both pretend to cover a wideout and then blitz or move inside - the distance was too far away to be effective. Once the defense showed their hand, the QB and receivers simply recognized the most probable path to success. It only had to work 25% of the time to keep it rolling since it was unlikely that a given play garnered less than 10 yards. When the defense clogged up the receivers, it made it easy to slip a hand off for a big gain.

It sounds like everyone should do that, but it leaves out the fact that Baylor's players were ultra-talented - at least as far as accomplishing the collegiate tasks at hand. Yes, Briles brilliantly put them in position, but the players made it happen.

It doesn't work in the NFL for the same reason it wouldn't work against Aranda's teams. Baylor's players challenged you one-on-one. Aranda's players were good enough to win those one-on-ones enough of the time to slow even the best offenses.

Keep in mind that football evolution is real. The early Big 12 focused on stopping Nebraska's beefy maulers. You needed huge LBs to stop them. Leach and OU unleashed a ton of squirty receivers that no one could catch. They won until the defenses caught up. TAMU sucker punched almighty Alabama with their spread offense (that the SEC had never seen) until they too caught up.

Dave Aranda is a proven great defensive coach. However, when the game starts, the 18-22 year olds still have to outperform their opponents regardless of scheme.

I don't have any doubt he knows how to put a top notch D on the field. But, he's not a defensive coordinator any longer. He's responsible for both sides of the ball now, so hopefully he's spending more time working with Grimes on that side of the ball because that is where we were woefully inept last year and looked the same in the Spring.

Stopping the spread? My girlfriend's father had a lot to say about that every time I went to her house.
