Whut happened? Were there not that many available this year or has the talent level dropped off compared to the powers in the SEC?

Even Tulsa and Houston had first rounders.

Do we have anyone with a chance to get drafted? Seems like a lot our guys end up undrafted free agents.
Retreat Hell! We just got here! The 2/5

The Big 12 talent pool has gotten much worse over the years since A&M went to the SEC. That opened the floodgates for Alabama, Auburn, the Mississippi schools, and to a lesser extent, Florida and Georgia to recruit Texas really hard. In the SEC and even the ACC, pretty much every state is a talent rich area (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the DMV area). Whereas, in the B12, pretty much Texas is the only talent rich area as Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, and West Virginia really don't put out a lot of top talent regularly. With all of these extra SEC schools now putting an emphasis on recruiting Texas, the talent that normally used to mostly go to B12 schools is now getting spread thin. That's my two cents at least, for what it's worth.

William Bradley King has a chance, but I would expect him to go late in Day 3 or UDFA

The Big 12 is a second tier conference in football at this point. Essentially the Big East.

There wasn't enough room for the Big 12 in the first round with all of the Alabama picks. The amazing thing is that Alabama will be a title contender again this season after losing 6 first round picks.

Cynic that I am, I always thought that if Baylor had signed Earl Campbell, he would have become one of the best linebackers ever to play for the Bears.

Anyone have a list of how many of the 1st round draft picks played at Texas high schools?

3. Waddle from Bama, slater from Northwestern and the guy from UH. All from Houston area.

Thanks. So 3 of 32, and none went to a Big 12 school. Turner received no Big 12 offers according to 247, although not surprising since he was a 2 star. Only Big 12 to offer Slater was Kansas according to 247. Waddle, of course, was wanted by everyone.

He played in Jennings, Louisiana.

And to think..big 12 used to own the skill positions for a little while until the SEC decided they like offense too.

WOW. Talk about Big 12 being left behind.

2021 NFL Draft Picks by College Through Round 3

Bama (8)
UGA, tOSU (6)
Mich, ND (5)
Clemson (4)
PSU, Stanford, NC, Wash, VT (3)
So Car, NW, Miami, Oregon, Minn, Ken, NDS, LSU, UT, OU, Syracuse,BYU and UCF (2)

Reflecting on Rhule's success, he really didn't have a lot of top quality opposition in this conference during his stay. I think he had a vision that defense would be successful in this conference and he was proven to be correct. A little D got you a lot of wins.

There was a time when UT ruled and every kid in junior high couldn't wait to play for them. There has been no team other than OU that can say that today.

Today's kids see Bama and tOSU and other elite programs and they can't wait to play for them.

Bama and Clemson have had the top 2 coaches in college football for more than a decade too. We need some form of stability with a coaching staff or at least it could be nice.

The real amazing thing is that Alabama had 8 out of the first 36 drafted.

Not really, they pay very well for the best players every year.

The issue is complicated. The short answer is the Big 12 only has two programs that are football factories - one or them has been failing to meet that standard as of late - and that has a negative impact on recruiting. That is important because many recruits that go in the higher rounds were expected to be drafted in the higher rounds when they graduated from high school.

The long answer is that recruits expected to be drafted early based on their high school performance want to only be on a campus for 3 years and then enter the draft, and the only way they can do that is to sign with colleges that regularly get players into the NFL after 3 years - i.e. football factories. The majority of the programs in the Big 12 are not football factories, and thus they generally need to keep recruits on campus for longer than 3 years and that is unattractive to those types recruits. This results in the non-football factory Big 12 teams recruiting at a mediocre or worst level when compared to the P5, and then that talent gap appearing in the draft.

Every coach I have ever met says winning is all about recruiting. And every kid thinks they have a chance to play in the NFL. So if in today's world, the SEC is the gateway to that chance above every other conference? Can someone realistically please tell me? How does anyone expect a non-SEC school, other than possibly a school like Clemson or Ohio State with a little historical momentum, ever expect to have a legit chance at being a top contender? Every high school stud, along with their momma's and daddy's, are watching this NFL draft. If you are a 4 or 5 Star player.....where are you going to go? Well, if you have an offer...you start with Alabama first, and then you work your way down the SEC list. But you sure as heck don't start by looking at the Big12 or any other mediocre conference. I don't care who we have as a coach at Baylor. He is fighting a tidal wave of odds to get Baylor to the top of the ladder. Alabama just had 8 of their 20-21 players selected in the 1st Round of the NFL draft...in ONE draft. Just think about that. 4 years ago, these kids were in high school. Picking a school. Where did they go? Most schools have never had one kid in their history be selected in the first round. So do the numbers. It is so out of balance that 95% of the Div. 1 schools today don't have a chance. It is crazy math.

I still blame Texas High School coaches and the move away from traditional football for our decline. I remember when former TT coach mouthed off after finally winning a game against Arkansas up in the hills. Guess what.
Arkie coach was correct.

2015. Bielema vs Kingsbury

Nope. The top Texas players don't play in the Big 12

Final Tally:

2021 NFL Draft by conference
  • SEC -- 65
  • Big Ten -- 44
  • ACC -- 42
  • Pac-12 -- 28
  • Big 12 -- 22
  • AAC -- 19
  • Independent -- 15
  • Conference USA -- 5
  • FCS -- 5
  • MAC -- 4
  • Mountain West -- 3
  • Sun Belt -- 3
  • Divisions II/III -- 4

Doesn't help that we only have 10 teams, but even if you weight it, we are still behind. Bottom line, we have a # of conference members in talent poor states. Baylor has also stopped pulling its weight as of late. Hopefully we will turn that around quickly.

This. The core issues are:
1. Quantity of membership is too low.
2. Quantity of conference games is too high.
3. The lack of geographic diversity of membership causes cannabalization between members in regard to recruiting the same recruits.
4. The lack of NFL development.
5. The lack of control of Texas due to the loss of Texas A&M.
6. The conference lacks a recruiting upper middle class unlike every other conference.
7. The conference lacks meaningful out of conference annual rivalries outside of Iowa State v. Iowa.

In regard to 3 and 5, the combination of the elevation of TCU to the Big 12, the rise of Baylor and Oklahoma State to mid-tier P5 status in the late 2000-2010 decade, and the loss of Texas A&M to the SEC (and the associated Texas recruits that now choose Texas A&M for that reason) directly led to the fall of Texas Tech from the upper middle class of the P5. The end result is good in the sense that now that TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma State are now all mid-range P5 programs that occasionally have good years when they previously were not in that category, but the result is also bad in that Texas Tech has fallen from where it was to being in that group.

#2 on your list is simply untrue. The SEC and ACC are the only P5 conference that play fewer conference games. They are also frequently roundly criticized for their cowardice. But, hey, it's worked for them and I guess perception is everything.

Questions:
1. Which two conferences are the only conferences that have appeared in every CFP? The 14 team/8 conference game ACC and SEC.

2. Wasn't the 14 team B1G not always in the CFP until it added a 9th conference game? It fell from 100% to a 50% selection rate after the addition.

3. Isn't the PAC and its 12 team/9 conference game format selected to the CFP 40% of the time?

4. Isn't the Big 12 and it's 10 team/9 conference game format selected to the CFP 57% of the time? This isn't even examining the Big 12's placement, which has been #4 in each case other once where it was #2, and that placement implies that the Big 12 was generally on the fringe of selection.

The above only looks at CFP and doesn't consider the other impacts, such as making it more difficult for mid level and below teams to reach bowls.
