No. 19 Texas Tech Hands Baylor Basketball First Loss of Season, 65-62
WACO, Texas – Baylor Men’s Basketball is undefeated no more, dropping their Tuesday night contest against the No. 19 Texas Tech Red Raiders 65-62.
The Bears are now 15-1 (3-1 in conference) and lost the nation’s longest active win streak as well. Texas Tech is now 12-3 (2-1 in conference) and bosts wins over Baylor and No. 6 Kansas.
The Red Raiders won by forcing Baylor off the three-point line and into more contested midrange and closer range shots. The Bears shot 41% from the field and a disappointing 8-13 from the free-throw line.
They did win the boards 35-31 and had an impressive 13 offensive rebounds, which just did not
translate into enough second-chance points.
Baylor jumped out to an early 15 point lead with Flagler netting three 3s to make hit 24-9, but Tech fought back.
The Red Raiders narrowed it to 31-26 at halftime with a late 6-0 run, then jumped on the Bears early in the second half with another 7-2 run.
From there, it was a back and forth affair with Baylor’s guards essentially going against the Raiders' whole lineup.
Adam Flagler, James Akinjo, and LJ Cryer registered 17, 17, and 10 respectively.
Tech spread out the attack more with five players in double figures.
Adonis Arms (#25) led the way with 14 points and a self-described “nasty” dunk to help finish off the Bears.
Kevin McCullar (#15) had 12 points coming off of an ankle injury, and Scott Drew singled him out as a difference-maker after the game.
Baylor fought hard though, even when the game looked to be decided.
Bryson Williams (#11) made a jumper to put Tech up 63-57, but Akinjo came back and hit a three
and the Bears forced a turnover.
With Baylor down 65-62 and 19 seconds left, Akinjo and company had one last chance to tie the game. After a hectic possession, Akinjo had to force up a contested look at the buzzer that fell short.
The Bears will look to rebound at home against Oklahoma State on Saturday (1/15) at 4 PM CT. That game will be televised on ESPN.
