I've had two stents inserted and I'm 75, soon to be 76. Self is only 62 and he's now up to four. It's not fun. I will probably need two more, or bypass surgery in the next year or two.

Self now knows that things don't look great for him. His next step is probably bypass surgery, which is really not fun. I'm sure he has great doctors and impeccable care, but sometimes genetics outweigh care and diet. Like me, he probably recalls all of the cheeseburgers and chicken fried steaks he ate before the first two stents.

I wish nothing but the best for him and I hope he has the wisdom to listen to his doctors and don't let his ego get in the way.

To my Baylor Fans friends, I suggest the following:

1. Lose weight....a lot of weight
2. Cut out sugar and more than a little of alcohol
3. Cut out high fructose corn syrup...and don't eat much at all at drive throughs
4. Start cooking your own food. You will save money and feel much better.
5. Start walking and swimming and doing anything else to stay active.
6. Don't let yourself get overburdened by politics. Stress is a killer.

I've lost 40 pounds in the past 5 years and I feel great.

Take care of yourself.

Agreed. Thanks for posting! Serving as head men's basketball coach at a school where fans see basketball dominance as a birthright is hardly a recipe for a stress-free existence.

There is a better than good chance KU finishes no higher than 4th and possibly as low as 6th or 7th this season and an unlikely probability they advance far in the NCAAs. I don't think Self survives any of those results with that power mongering fanbase but there's also no way KU would ever fire a HOF coach. So this may be the perfect parting of the ways that allows him to retire at year end for health reasons, then wait until a NBA spot opens that he likes, and for Kansas to move on and satisfy the power mongering portion of its fanbase.

And take a statin drug. Statins have miraculousy reduced heart attacks in the last 40 years. Along with the drop in smoking and better blood pressure control.

Spot on....Statin's are the innocent killers of your mind and body. Heart aliments are a result of inflammation.

All excellent suggestions however genetics is the most important, I ate the worst diet possible until a few years ago and I am over 60 and have zero blockage and have high cholesterol and fat in my blood since I was 30. Just taking a small dose of a statin to prevent blood clot.
