SportsLine Simulation Sunday: Projected 2020 NCAA Tourney Simulated

On Sunday it was Sport Line Simulation Sunday! SportLine simulated every game in its projected NCAA Tournament bracket. Baylor was awarded the number 1 seed in the South Region in this projection. Here is how Baylor was projected according to the model published by CBS Sports Writer David Cobb:

Baylor Results

Round of 64

No. 1 Baylor 75, No. 16 Boston University 61: The Bears, who won 23-straight games this season, but had lost three of their last five games, have an easy time vs. the Terriers.

Round of 32

No. 1 Baylor 69, No. 9 Arizona 67: Baylor survives an upset bid against Arizona to make its fifth Sweet 16 in the last 11 years.

Sweet 16

No. 1 Baylor 68, No. 5 Ohio State 67: The Buckeyes come within a point of one of the tournament's biggest upsets but Baylor survives again.

Elite 8

No. 2 Florida State 69, No. 1 Baylor 68: After two wins by a combined three points, Baylor's luck runs out in a close loss to the Seminoles.

According to the simulation Baylor cruises in the first round before being in two very close contests against Arizona and Ohio state before falling in the Elite 8 against Florida State. Top overall seed Kansas fell to Duke in the Elite 8 as well.

The Final Four consisted of Duke, Dayton, Gonzaga, and Florida State with Dayton coming away with the simulated National Championship.

So one simulation has Dayton winning it all, and another has them losing in the first round?

Makes sense. Virginia lost to a 16, and basically the same team won the whole thing the next year.

Every stinkin simulation has this highest average-ranked team for the season bowing out before the final four.

No respect at all.

No surprise at all.

The only thing that could keep these guys from their destiny of a national championship.

Happened.

One that was detailed in the DMN this morning had the Bears losing to Ohio State in the championship game. Kansas was eliminated in the Elite 8.

Well, there are several other teams out there who would disagree that this was the ONLY thing keeping Baylor from a national championship. But it was our best chance and our first ever No. 1 seed.

All this is very interesting but it also points out that simulations only go so far. There is nothing like a real tournament. There are far too many variables that cannot be simulated. I'd say Baylor has about as much chance winning it all in a real tournament as any of the hypothetical winners in the simulations.

Oh well. There's always next season.
