I didn't watch the game and was wondering how our big guys did? Thanks!

I didn't see all of the game, but if you look at it holistically -- the combo of JTT/Thamba gave us 12 points and 14 rebounds from the Center position. Obviously, you have to consider the competition, which was certainly not the "bigs" of Illinois or Gonzaga..........but if we get that kind of production from the center position to supplement the plethora of shooters that we have, we are looking good!

It was more than just looking at the stat line.

They didn't create a large presence in the paint on the defensive side which is what they need to do this year. UL's 6'11 big went 9-9 from the field (22 points) with 8 boards. Maybe he's had a great off-season but he only averaged 4 points and 3 boards a year ago playing for Portland in the WCC.

On top of that they were weak in their help defense against UL's guards. It was game one so nothing to be doom and gloom about, but there is a lot to fix like always.

I watched the game. If we can get our "bigs" to play solid defense and rebound, we will be fine,

If there is a weakness to this team, it is here. This is where we feel the departure of Gillespie. JG could develop but he is smaller. Flo still needs development.

The guards are so good, and can score on anyone. How far we go this season hinges on the "5" spot.

Some of our fans incorrectly think we have to be great at the 5. That's not the case at all. Just needs to be serviceable, whether achieved through one, two or three different guys filling in throughout the game. Anyone who watched the game last night would have been more concerned with the sloppiness and inability of the 3 and 4 to rotate on D and give up wide open shots from the corner much worse than the bigs' performance. Those are the mistakes Gonzaga or any good outside shooting team will use to bury us.

Our best rotation at the 4/5 spots will be JTT / Vital / Mayer. That way we can play to our strengths and allow our 5 elite combo guards more playing time. Thamba does not fit modern positionless basketball and is only good for 5-10 minutes per game. Think of it this way, every minute Thamba gets is one less minute for Cryer who needs to play as much as possible.
