WACO, Texas — The No. 9 Baylor Women’s Basketball team (15-5, 5-3) lost a tight contest to the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners (19-3, 8-2) 78-77. Despite 23 points and 6 assists from Sarah Andrews, the Bears were beaten by a Liz Scott layup with 6 seconds left.

Scott’s winning shot capped off an 8-1 run in the final 2:30 of the game, where Baylor missed its last five shots plus one free throw in that span.

“We got fouled all night long,” Coach Nicki Collen said after the game, having also made it clear that she had been preparing the team for a particularly physical game.

Oklahoma was called for 25 fouls, but NaLyssa Smith still registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. Ja’Mee Asberry added 15 points and four assists, while Caitlin Bickle scored 11 as well.

Baylor had gotten off to another good start, finishing the first quarter up 25-16. However, a 22-13 second quarter left them tied at halftime.

The Bears lost the rebounding battle 46-35 tonight and lacked offensive flow for extended stretches as well.

When they found a rhythm for short stretches like late in the third quarter, they would build a small lead. 58-52 in the third quarter and then again late in the fourth with a 76-70 lead.

But as mentioned earlier, the Bears went cold in the last 3 minutes. The team finished shooting 37% from the field, 26% from three, and 71% from the free-throw line.

This was Oklahoma’s first win in Waco since 2009, very fitting for such a weird night of basketball.

Collen was particularly unhappy with the circumstances of the night considering family night was delayed due to travel problems for Oklahoma.

At the end of the day, Collen said, “I didn’t get the best out of the team today.” The team will know

that it wasn’t their best performance too.

Up next is a visit from Texas on Friday evening at 7 PM which will be televised on ESPN 2.

The No. 13 Longhorns are already in Waco in light of the inclement weather.  The Longhorns are not yet in Waco, as of Thursday morning.
