Saw on talk show just now for people to go to change.org to sign a petition to make Brittney Griner's release a priority. Just FYI Mack Rhoads commented publicly on Saturday that Baylor family needs to send up prayers on her behalf and that Baylor is looking into what they can do to help.

Petition? LOL!!!! You are such a naive and optimistic soul. I love it.

You should watch the movie Midnight Express. Anyone who travels abroad should.

Petition is a feel good waste of time. Love the sentiment bug the former KGB officer isn't going to care about a bunch of Americans signing a petition.

I hope signing a petition helps out some way. Can't see how it would persuade a communist in the least but if it does power to it. I've also had the same feeling about wearing a pink shirt to prevent breast cancer. I suppose the idea is to put so much pink in front of the eyeballs that more people will get up off their lazy couches and send in a donation for research. I guess that's the idea behind the idea.

If we as citizens cannot peacefully express our opinions, then we have become Russia. Whether I agree with her or anyone else on any given topic, I will stand up for a person's right to peacefully protest.

It appears that you favor conformity over freedom.

Next up for AirBear, protesting at soldiers funerals and cops funerals because everything "peaceful" is so worthy of support.

Did not say that I would join them. What is worthy of support is protecting each of our rights under the constitution. But nice attempt to gaslight.

Seriously....Why is it Russia - - I can think of two countries that come to mind where people can't freely express their opinions ......one is where Texas is located and another one is North of Washington State....

BG was stupid trying to travel with an llegal drug. Plain and simple. I've traveled to Russia several times in the past decade and almost each time I see a stupid American thinking the rules don't apply to them.

I am sorry she is in jail. Maybe she can use this experience to help others to not make the same mistakes....my guess is she won't.

I only selected Russia because that is where she is incarcerated and, generally speaking--most Americans would not expect a Russian to be able to speak their mind without the government shutting it down---if the government so chooses. (Which is why people in Russia protesting the Ukraine invasion are being arrested now.) I agree that if BG was traveling with illegal drugs in her possession that was stupid. 100%.

I agree with AirBear, BG has the freedom to peacefully protest.

If she brought an illegal substance into Russia (especially at this time) that is a serious judgment error that she is paying dearly for. Nonetheless, I am surprised that anyone would express an opinion that they hoped BG would "rot." I find that comment far more offensive than her taking a knee during the anthem, but that is certainly the poster's protected viewpoint, despite how cruel I might find it.

I am concerned though that BG may in fact rot in jail/be killed in jail. This is more than a possibility. She has many strikes against her, and there is no telling what atrocities she may already have been subjected to. I see no humor in her situation.

She is a Baylor graduate-and a Baylor superstar. If there were ever a time to offer her our prayers and support, this is the time.

Do you mean Alaska or Canada? If the latter, I wouldn't be so sure. Their reaction to the peaceful freedom convoy says something different.

Freedom of speech was never meant to be freedom to only express the kind of speech that you like. Much of the discord in this country stems from both sides refusing to allow the other tribe to their speech and believe that their own speech is the only valid speech that should be heard. It doesn't help when the other side's speech is twisted, spun, exaggerated or taken out of context to negative extremes. If there is one activity our two dominant tribes in this country both excel at is denouncing and vilifying those with whom they do not agree, many times without even taking the time to even try to visualize themselves in the other person's shoes in an effort to understand why they think as they do. I suspect today the Founding Fathers would shake their heads at both tribes as to how their intent of the Constitution has been twisted to fit political agendas that have no room for people unlike their own tribe.

lol, AirBear reaches into his bag of buzzwords and pulls out gaslight.

nah, just making a point. Not every form of "peaceful protest" should be so readily defended. We can all agree that kneeling for the flag is legal and within someone's rights, but that doesn't make it correct or worthy, and certainly not worth "defending" in the name of "citizens rights" - which is of course just a non sincere point since that's not the real issue.

Regardless, I hope she gets home safe and soon.

From what I've seen, only one side is so intolerant of other viewpoints (even when they are obvious truths), they censor them, try to get them fired, try to deny them access to banking, & basically try to completely destroy them. All too often these fascists succeed in these hateful & brutal efforts.

As for Britney, her political & personal decisions are irrelevant. She's an American & does not deserve to be used as a political pawn by a ruthless dictator. I want her back home safely. Same for Paul Whelan & Trevor Reed.

I disagree. I think kneeling in protest during the national anthem can be very correct and very worthy. If the government tried to restrict my right to go to church, you can bet I would be kneeling at every opportunity to make my point.

The fact that we have not experienced what someone else has and they decide to protest-- does not mean they are wrong. It should cause us to ask them why.

Thanks for affirming one of my points, you weren't standing up for her rights, you were sympathetic to her cause. The "standing up for her right to protest" is a fake argument. Her right to protest was never in question.
The vast majority of Americans thought kneeling for the flag was offensive, much like protesting at a funeral, but after years of media programming, people have just accepted it, though most still don't think it good or honorable or worthy, or effective now that the shock value is gone

Next up airbear applauds Westboro for their offensive yet peaceful protests, because you never know what they've gone through or experienced.

No. Thank you for judging others Reverend. You judge me but you don't know me.

You do not know my life experiences. But yet you offer your judgment that I must be wrong because I am willing to stand for the rights of others to protest--even those that I disagree with. I realize it requires some complex thought-----but just for a moment set your tin foil hat aside and try to follow.

As you decide which rights are "worthy" based on your view of the world, remember the words of the former German U boat commander in WWI who later went to the seminary and became a Lutheran minister who supported Hitler---until the Nazis started to put pressure on the church and the started had him under survelience:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a Jew.
Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak for me.

If you cannot grasp the concept of being able to support someone's right to protest without being able to support their cause-----then I cannot help you.

The constitutional right in question is her right to kneel for the National Anthem in the USA. No one has inferred that she has a constitutional right to bring drugs into a foreign country.

I don't think anyone has suggested she has the right to transport drugs. It seems the common view is that it is a set up. The charges are likely bogus & she is being used as a political pawn. It's easy to make that assumption in a country led by a former KGB officer who wants to resurrect the evil empire.

NEWS UPDATE
Russian team ownership
UMMC Ekaterinburg, the team Griner plays for, is owned by the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company, a multibillion-dollar corporation that produces nickel, copper, coal and lead. The team is positive publicity for the company and an entertainment perk for its workers, and UMMC has brought in many of the best American players for several years.

Overseas leagues & WNBA financials
Corporate and oligarch backing is how overseas teams can afford to pay top Americans much more -- sometimes over $1 million per season -- than the WNBA, for which salaries are collectively bargained. The current top WNBA salary is $228,094, and each team has a hard salary cap of $1,379,200. The WNBA is set up to try to earn a profit for owners and keep the whole league sustainable and competitively equitable for its 12 teams, whereas in many overseas leagues, team costs are written off as a business expense.

Dual citizenship
There are typically limits to how many American players each overseas team can have on its roster. But there's an end-around with that: Many Americans obtain dual citizenship so they don't "count" as an American on the roster. Former American WNBA player Becky Hammon received dual citizenship and played for Russia in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Griner, however, does not have dual Russian citizenship.
