COACHING CHANGES

"There is a shake up going on within West Virginia's staff, as 3 veteran employees have each recently left the program. Assistant coaches Chester Nichols and Lester Rowe, as well as long-time director of operations Pat Biondo, are no longer at WVU. Mike Carey has served as head coach for the past 18 seasons.

Lester Rowe Hired in 2011 by Carey as an assistant. Spent 8 seasons in that position.
Chester Nichols 11 seasons at WVU in 2 different stints (2003-09 & 2014-19).
Pat Biondo WVU women's staff member for 10 years.

What the heck is going on?

Craig Carey has been elevated to WVU WBB assistant coach for the 2019-20 season.

Head coach Mike Carey said
"Craig has been with the program for many years, starting as a practice player and later as our video coordinator. He knows the players, our style of play and our personnel very well. I think it will be a smooth transition and a great fit for our program."

Craig Carey said
"I'm thankful to Director of Athletics Shane Lyons, Senior Associate AD Terri Howes and, of course, my dad for this great opportunity."

2015-present Video coordinator that was the liaison for film exchange with opponents. Helped coaches prepare for scouting and provided video for instructional purposes. Supervised and prepared the WBB practice players. Stepped in as interim/countable assistant coach on several occasions over the past 4 years.

2009-15 Served as assistant camp coordinator for WBB camps. Helped organize the structure of individual and team camps. Served as camp clinician.

2010-11 Played for WVU MBB.

This entire development ought to make the Trustees a bit unsettled.

Might be a dynamite move but little margin for error.

Depends on why the others left. Does anyone know why?

U19 USA BASKETBALL

"Rising Iowa State University sophomore Ashley Joens (Iowa City IA), who helped the USA claim gold at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, has been added to the 2019 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Cup Team. The 5-foot-11 guard replaces Jordan Nixon (Notre Dame/New York NY), who was injured during the team's training camp in Colorado Springs CO.

The 13th FIBA U19 World Cup will be held July 20-28 in Bangkok, Thailand, where the USA will attempt to capture an eighth gold medal.

As a member of the 2018 USA U18 National Team, Joens averaged 10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game to help the USA to a 6-0 record and a gold medal in Mexico City, which qualified the USA for this year's U19 World Cup."

WNBA CONNECTICUT WAIVE BRIDGET CARLETON

"The Connecticut Sun waived former Iowa State standout Bridget Carleton on Wednesday to make room for Natisha Hiedeman. Carleton had seen limited action in four games for the Sun (9-4), which has the second-best record in the WNBA.

After an outstanding senior season at ISU in which she was named the Big 12 player of the year and the nation's top small forward, Carleton was selected by the Sun with the 21st pick in the WNBA Draft. Hiedeman, who played at Marquette and was selected as the unanimous Big East player of the year, was also a second round pick (No. 18 overall) and competed in the Sun's training camp. She was the final player cut by Connecticut, as Carleton edged her out to make the opening-night roster.

The WNBA can be an unforgiving league. Of the 24 players selected in the second and third rounds of the 2019 draft, 17 either failed to make opening-night rosters or have been cut at some point. That includes Carleton and Hiedeman, as well as Iowa's Megan Gustafson (No. 17 overall), who was initially cut by the Dallas Wings but was later re-signed by them.

Carleton could be picked up by another WNBA team this summer, and will spend the winter playing with the UCU Townsville Fire, a professional team in Australia's Women's National Basketball League."

NEW ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Jordin Westbrook has been named on the new roster as Kaylin Shillinglaw Rice's replacement.

She joined the McLane Stadium opening team in June prior to its opening in August 2014. She started as an intern and moved to a Graduate Assistant while obtaining her Masters Degree, and then on to be the Operations & Events Manager.

In this role, Jordin handles all operations & events at McLane Stadium outside of the Baylor Club spaces. Jordin is the Camp Director for McLane Stadium Summer camp as well as the event manager for all other events held on site.

Jordin is a recent graduate of Baylor University. She graduated in 2013 with her undergraduate degree in Communication Studies and her Masters Degree in 2015 in Sports Management. Prior to her internship with SMG Jordin was a student manager for the Baylor Women's Basketball team from 2009-2013."

I agree with Wineguy89 - Big 12 coaches have been notorious for slighting BU WBB players since the inception of the big 12. How can supposed professional coaches be so short sighted ? Most egregious was Sophia Young not voted freshman of the year !
Carlton was a very good player but KB had to face double and triple teams throughout the conference play. KB forced them to change what they normally do Carlton never had to face a double team and yet somehow that was not taken into consideration. Its all about the stats and stats as we all know do not reflect the true value of a player just look at DiDi's stats was she not worthy of All Big 12 Status 2nd team ? KB & LC on ALL BIG 12 SECOND Team ????????? I understand the conference want to spread the awards around but BU DOMINATED and should have has 2 First Teamers and 3 Second Teamers plus MVP and Defensive MVP

Texas Tech is undergoing a radical reconfiguration of their WBB team. Current stats are 8 players listed in the Ncaa transfer portal for transfer, 7 of whom have found a new home, Angel Hayden still looking. But the current TTech roster for 2019 2020 has 11 players. So players are leaving, but new players are coming in. I have never seen a changeover quite this radical. But with 11 players plus Hayden if she decides to stay, 12, is an adequate team.

AD and ex KState LB Hocutt has been making big progress "reshaping"(as you say) Tech athletic programs lately

WBB is prime example. You don't do complete overhauls with programs if ya wanna keep losing. I think Tech WBB is only program at Tech to have won NC besides this years Men's Track. I'm strongly suspecting there's underlying murmurs with this new WBB coach that they wanna get back to that level?

They are light years from Baylor but may be striving to get to UT or last season's Iowa St level asap

Eyes open to watching what this new Tech WBB Coach is doing. Seems she's reshaped coach staff too but I'm not sure?

Edit: I just checked Stollings contract after Tech FIRED old WBB coach in '18. Interesting. She got $200,000 signing bonus to leave Minnesota and $200,000 raise in salary to $700,000! Plus additional $20,000 per season for 5 season of her contract and free membership to Country Club. Plus $750,000 for staff. 6th season contract contingent on making NCAA tournament 2 of first 5 seasons! That means she has to make tournament 2 of next 3 seasons! That's the reason for these moves and hires she's making. Pretty aggressive moves by Tech AD

The Tech coach has been a winner, both as player and lower level coach. She knows what winning looks like. It didn't look like what had been happening at Tech. Will she be successful there? Who knows? But whoever is going to get them back would need to initiate the same purge, in my opinion.

I think she's been at Tech for one (1) year, not two (2). That means she's got four (4) seasons to get to the tournament.

TRANSFER OUT

Micaela Wilson comes to Lamar University after spending the last 2 years at the University of Kansas.

"Micaela is someone that I have spent time with, and I have gotten to know her and her family over the last two years at the University of Kansas," remarked Lamar head coach Aqua Franklin. "It was really important to her to get closer to home and give her family the opportunity to watch her play. Micaela is long, athletic and skilled forward who has the ability to stretch the defense. She will be able to create miss matches on the offensive end with the ability to score from inside and out. She is a steal for the Southland Conference."
