It's a measurement, for each player, of their team's total scoring vs the opponent's team when that player is on the floor. The purpose is to provide another gauge of a player's impact on the game. In other words, it is an effort to measure a the fact that many players impact a game in ways other than traditional measurements (i.e. defensive rotations or ball movement, etc as opposed to scoring, rebounding. or assists).

The perceived flaw is that it uses a total team metric to analyze an individual player's impact, but it's still an interesting indicator.

There are many Baylor fans who believe that Lauren's impact on a game goes far beyond traditional measurements such as scoring, rebounding, or assists. That she does so many little things with her defense and passing which don't get measured (deterring drives to the hoop with her shot blocking presence, subtle defensive rotations and positioning, making the pass which leads to the assist, making the screen which opens the driving lane, offensive spacing which creates better angles, etc). Lauren should be the Queen of the +/- rating.

If you look at the Fever stats in your link from the Sky game, every Fever player has a negative rating, because the team was blown out by 23 points. Lauren had the 3rd best +/- on the team with -9, so that's a small silver lining suggesting that she may be having a positive impact on the game compared to her teammates.

Another example of a player who had high plus/minus stats, without recording major stats in other single categories, was Ish Wainright.

Perfect example for Lauren was the Notre Dame game.

Her individual stats were good, but not amazing. 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists, 1 steal. But we remember well what the tenor of the game was with Lauren versus without Lauren. Unfortunately I couldn't find the +/- stats anywhere for that game, but it is intended to measure that difference.

Before Cox was injured we were 14 points ahead, so not hard to compute. ND had no clue as how to score inside with Lauren and Kalini. I rewatch that game every 30 or 60 days. Our margin of victory would have been 15 to 20 points, assuming Kim would not have subbed out the starters until 2:00 remaining. There was no doubt how good this team was at both ends. Lauren changed the Notre Dame offense in the first quarter, with her block on Turner and her presence in the paint. Lauren Cox is a physical beast, an intimidating force, a nightmare for opposing interior players, guards would see her and quickly decide not to enter the paint. One of the smartest players ever to play for the Lady Bears, always knew where to be on the court. Add Kalini, DiDi, Juicy and an improving Chloe, they created a dominating defensive team.

To answer your question plus 13, after she went to the floor in pain, the place she would have been was vacated and Notre Dame scored on an offensive rebound. Include that in the analysis and Cox is plus 11 in 29 minutes.
