WACO, Texas – The Bears (29-14, 9-9 Big 12) have now won four-straight Big 12 series after taking two-of-three from the Wildcats (28-18, 7-11 Big 12).

FRIDAY - Baylor 17, Kansas State 2

Following a 10-day break, Baylor picked up right where it left off with a 17-2 thrashing of Kansas State on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (28-13, 8-8 Big 12) have won 15 of their last 18 games after the victory over the Wildcats (27-17, 6-10 Big 12).

The Bears took an early 2-0 lead after fifth-year senior Andy Thomas hit a two-run homer to right field for his eighth of the season.

In the second inning, BU continued to put the pressure on offensively when junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo used a sacrifice fly to score second-year freshman Kyle Nevin. Later in the inning, second-year freshman Jared McKenzie hit a three-run homer to stretch Baylor’s lead to 6-0.

The longball kept connecting in the third, as newcomer Jack Pineda hit a three-run blast to right field in the third, making it 9-0 in favor of the Bears.

K-State got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo shot, but Baylor responded with RBI by both true freshman Alex Gonzales and Pineda to push the Baylor advantage to 11-1.

In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats scratched across a run, but the Bears added another two in the home-half when Nevin hit an RBI-single and then Cardoza-Oquendo singled to left-field to make it 13-2.

Pineda led off the sixth with a triple, while McKenzie brought him home with a single to extend the lead to 14-2.

The Bears scored another three runs in the eighth inning with RBI by both Thomas and Nevin, as a wild pitch capped the scoring at 17 runs.

Baylor starter Hayden Kettler (4-2) was solid on the mound after throwing six innings and only allowing two runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out six. It was the third consecutive game that Kettler did not allow a walk. K-State starting pitcher Connor McCullough (4-3) was tabbed with the loss.

SATURDAY - Kansas State 10, Baylor 3

Baylor baseball dropped game two against Kansas State, 10-3, on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (28-14, 8-9 Big 12) were tied with the Wildcats (28-17, 7-10 Big 12) going into the ninth inning when K-State put up a seven-spot in the top half.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead when fourth-year junior Davion Downey smacked his sixth home run of the season to make it 1-0 in the second. The Bears added another run after junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo used an RBI-single to double the BU lead after two innings.

Kansas State responded with a solo home run of its own in the third to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Both teams were held in check until the bottom of the sixth inning, where sophomore Jack Pineda came up with an RBI-single to push the advantage to 3-1. Once again, the Wildcats had a response with two runs in the seventh to knot things at 3-3.

In the ninth, K-State sealed the win with seven runs in the inning.

Baylor starter Cam Caley was fantastic on the mound throwing a career-long 5.2 innings, while only allowing one run on two hits, one walk and striking out five. K-State reliever Eric Torres (3-0) earned the win, while fifth-year senior Ryan Leckich (2-1) was tabbed with his first loss in 2021.

SUNDAY - Baylor 23, Kansas State 3

Baylor baseball shattered records in its 23-3 blow-out victory over Kansas State in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Baylor scored early and often after getting started in the home-half of the first when second-year freshman Tre Richardson smashed a triple off the center field wall to score second-year freshman Jared McKenzie. Later in the inning, sophomore Antonio Valdez used a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the second, sophomore Jack Pineda sliced an RBI-single to extend the advantage to 3-0, while in the third inning it was junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo who singled through the right side to make it 4-0.

Fifth-year senior Andy Thomas continued his hot-hitting with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 6-0.

The flood gates opened up in the bottom of the fifth with the Bears setting a program record for runs scored in a single inning. Baylor put up 17 runs on 11 hits, as the prior record was 14 runs against Houston back on April 19, 1985. The previous record for runs scored for BU in a single inning against a Big 12 opponent was 12 (twice) against Texas Tech with the most recent coming in 2007.

Both fourth-year junior Davion Downey and second-year freshman Kyle Nevin had three at-bats in the fifth, while Thomas mashed his second two-run home run of the day and also used a two-RBI single for his fifth and sixth RBI of the day.

The Bears scored their first 13 runs in the inning without recording an out and after scoring 17 runs, led 23-0, which tied the most total runs scored by a BU team in a game against a conference opponent since March 29, 1998 vs. Iowa State.

Baylor starter Blake Helton (4-2) had another solid outing after throwing five scoreless innings, while giving up three hits, walking one and striking out three. K-State starter Kasey Ford (4-1) was tabbed with his first loss of the season.
