Baylor's Cross Country teams began their Covid-shortened season last weekend in Abilene in dual meet against Abilene Christian. Both teams won, with the men being led by senior Connor Laktasic and Junior Ryan Day. Women were led by Celia Holmes and had three freshmen score for the women (Sunnyvale's Lily Jacobs, Kendall Mansukhani and Waco High's Anna Garner).

There are only three more meets this season, (1) Oklahoma State on October 3, (2) A&M on October 17, and the Conference Championships at Kansas on October 30.

Here is a report on last weekend's race from Baylor Athletics.

Considering it is fine to hold XC meets now it is a shame the track season was cancelled back in March. I'd guess the odds are very slim that an athlete running around outside and almost always more than six feet apart would spread the virus. Even if some events were viewed too dangerous many others could've happened. Think about pole vault, shot out, discus, long jump, high jump, 400 hurdles, etc. They would be more at risk at the grocery store.

Two meets under their belts. Two meets remaining.

This far into the the season, the men's team has been relying on Ryan Day (Jr) and Connor Laktasic (Sr) who have each placed first or second for Baylor in each race. The men placed 7th at OSU last weekend, in a meet that included a large number of Big 12 schools.

The women did real well last Saturday, placing 4th (behind Iowa State, OSU and Kansas State). Scoring for the team are Celia Holmes (Jr) and Sarah Antrich (Sr). Coach Capron has been getting solid production from two freshmen on the team, Lily Jacobs (Sunnyvale) and Anna Garner (Waco High) who have placed number 2 and 5 in both meets.

The next meet is in two weekends, at Texas A&M.

One unusual development is that the National Cross Country meet has been scheduled for next March. This means that the Cross Country teams could have some version of a second "regular season" between January and March 5. The NCAA is still studying criteria for qualifying for nationals. Of course it is also possible that Baylor coaches could focus the distance runners on the indoor track season which will be running simultaneously with the Winter cross season.
