David Brooks has a column today about "progressive sadness" -- meaning, the measurably poor mental health afflicting those on the political Left. Excerpt:

Young liberals were hit especially hard. A 2021 study by Catherine Gimbrone, Lisa M. Bates, Seth J. Prins and Katherine M. Keyes looked at the emotional states of 12th-grade students between 2005 and 2018. Liberal girls experienced a surge in depressive symptoms. Liberal boys weren't far behind. Conservative boys and girls also suffered from higher rates of depressive symptoms, but not nearly as much as liberals. Sadness was linked to ideology.
Lord knows the right has gone off on its own jarring psychological journey of late, but many on the left began to suffer from what you might call maladaptive sadness. This mind-set had three main features.
First, a catastrophizing mentality. For many, America's problems came to seem endemic: The American dream is a sham, climate change is so unstoppable, systemic racism is eternal. Making catastrophic pronouncements became a way to display that you were woke to the brutalities of American life. The problem, Matthew Yglesias recently wrote on his Substack, is that catastrophizing doesn't usually help you solve problems. People who provide therapy to depressive people try to break the cycle of catastrophic thinking so they can more calmly locate and deal with the problems they actually have control over.

My catastrophe is bigger than your catastrophe.

I think I've indulged in this mindset over federal spending.

What an incredibly stupid response from our resident leftist d-bag. This isn't about griping about behavior. It's about observing a group psychosis created through social contagion spread by social media use.

To constantly bully other kids?

To spend all their time on their phone and not talking to people?

to blindly trust what they see posted online?

To be self absorbed and worry about how many followers they have?

To cancel someone who posts something they don't agree with?

and so many others that could be listed here that all those sites have "taught" people to do.

TikTok should be banned because its rotting kids minds.

Especially the minds of young adolescent girls.

Suicide and depression are sky high compared to the late 90s and early 2000s

It's business model is getting people hooked...and if it causes depression, anxiety, and suicide...who cares.

https://www.texastribune.org/2022/02/01/teenage-girls-suicide-pandemic-covid/
"Hospital admissions for teenage girls who may have attempted suicide have increased 50% nationwide."

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2019/05/17/724299570/suicide-rate-among-girls-rising-faster-than-for-boys-study-finds

And the studies show that social media is poison to all of us...but especially young people.

[The TikTok algorithm is interest based, so it shows content that reflects what viewers have previously watched whether they engaged with it or not. Within a short space of time, the algorithm can detect their hobbies and interests, sense of humor, fashion style, music tastes, sexual orientation, political views and much more. This personalized viewing experience sounds harmless but it can push users down a rabbit hole that can reinforce negative thoughts and behaviors, and bombard them with content that is not always healthy.

Every time users watch a video on TikTok, dopamine is released in their brains in a way that mimics the effects of drugs and there is not much that can compete with this type of stimulation. Young people are more predisposed to addiction because their brain development is not complete until they reach 25 to 30 years old

We just need to make sure every young girl can cut her tits off and pretend to be a man and then they'll be fine.

It is also not surprising at all that transgenderism and gender dysmorphia took off in the internet age.

[When Jay told his mom he was bisexual at 14, she was supportive. But when he came out as transgender a few years later, she pushed back. She felt blindsided by the news. YouTube videos and online forums soon convinced her that she was right to feel that way. To her, it was clear that Jay was simply mistaken. A trans contagion called "rapid-onset gender dysphoria," spread through social media, had caught hold of him and convinced him he was not female, she said. The Internet had turned him trans.]

https://www.heritage.org/gender/commentary/how-big-tech-turns-kids-trans
"The spike in teens using social media and identifying as transgender is no mere coincidence."

"2,000% spike in transgenderism identification among the young in just the past two years"

We are confusing the hell out of our kids. My sister-in-law, an elementary music teacher, estimates around a quarter of her students are struggling with whether they are boys or girls. Simply incredible.

One of my wife's friends daughters came out as a man on facebook. Beautiful girl, had her breasts removed, and now goes by Xavier. And of course, got several hundred likes.

I'm one affair away from becoming a girl. (Or at least a gelding)

Of all the concerns on this thread about TikTock content, the expressed reason for the ban is because it's believed the app can gather and share data with the CCP.

Banning TikTock doesn't address the concerns you guys have expressed.

It just forces me to a Facebook group of gender dysfunction.

IMO, banning falls far short of addressing issues. If, user privacy is the goal, apply rules to all social media. If content is the goal, address it globally.

True,

For instance taking out the Gulf cartel will not stop the flow of drugs into the USA because there are other cartels to take their place.

But it's still a very good think to liquidate the gulf cartel if we can.

Catastrophic pronouncements from the right run along the lines of "the destruction of America" using touchstones in immigration, abortion, China etc.

But I can see where leftist youth would be more anxious about climate catastrophism. That's end of the world bull*****

[The American Medical Association found that even as the total number of pediatric emergency room visits declined, mental-health-related visits among children, teenagers, and young adults surged between 2011 and 2020, from 4.8 million to 7.5 million.

In that span, psychiatric patients' share of all pediatric and young-adult E.R. visits nearly doubled, from 7.7 to 13.1 percent.

Technology and social media, which have the effect of isolating people and coarsening conversations, have almost certainly contributed to the increase. So has the erosion of religious and moral norms against suicide.]
