It is a Christian nation that should be wildly accepting of everyone. The reason the founders made sure there could never be state religion, is they were very aware what religious persecution looked like. They wanted very much for the nation to welcome people of all religions, and walks of life.
To be telling others to move if they dont like "Christian America" is probably a bad idea, and not in the spirit of the country.
On topic, it is sad how much hate has consumed Stewart.
They wanted all walks of Europeans whether Christian or agnostic. Quit trying to make up fake US history.
At the time that was basically what they knew. You cannot view history through the lense of modern globalism/technology. In their minds, they were widely accepting of the most diverse group of beliefs they knew about. Had they known much about other beliefs outside Europe, I think they would have been accepting of those too. If they had found humans on Mars, I think they would have welcomed them.
So I totally disagree with you.
In reality the Founding Fathers were far better read than 90% of Dem voters.
Many had business partners in Europe or the West Indies.
Others certainly had commercial interests in Britain and France.
As a result they formed a Republic…..not a Democracy.
They were a bunch of smart guys, highly educated, certainly. But you cannot look at the specific problems they faced, and take their specific rhetoric about them, or their specific solutions, and apply them to the problems of today. It is better to understand their underlying wishes, logic, framework of the Constitution, and with that understanding try to solve problems today.
I was responding to a post that suggested they would not have been as accepting of beliefs outside European beliefs/traditions, and I am disagreeing with that.
