Why push Turkey further into the grip of Russia?

U.S. stocks were lower Monday but the contagion from the economic crisis in Turkey remained largely confined to emerging-market assets. The dollar surged to its highest in 14 months, punishing commodities from crude to metals.

The S&P 500 Index declined for a fourth straight day, its longest losing streak in five months, due to weakness in energy, materials and financial firms. Turkey's lira sank for a fourth day, hitting a new low. Emerging-market equities tumbled more than 2 percent and currencies dropped 1 percent, with South Africa's rand falling to the lowest since June 2016. European banks dragged down stocks in the region, though equity measures closed well above the day's lows.

The economic troubles in Turkey gripped global financial markets, with investors scrambling to determine whether and how far pain there would spread. Early signs that markets would buckle faded during the American trading day as stocks swung between gains and losses, though declines in developed-nation assets remained deep.

"The fact that the early day rally faded has spooked investors that Turkey risk is still increasing toward a bigger event," said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Leuthold Weeden Capital Management. "Contagion risk is the primary driver today."

Investors started the week after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan maintained his defiance toward both the U.S. and financial-market orthodoxy in speeches on Sunday, heightening concern that the financial woes there would spread to other markets. Central bank moves to boost liquidity provided little relief.

May be the case of a stopped clock, but putting sanctions on Turkey is something the Trump administration should be doing.

Should Turkey rethink its commitment to our strategic military placement in that country?

You do understand that was Turkey was the largest trading partner with ISIS and continues to provide safe haven status to a number of radicals that are leading alt terror groups.

Ally of US, nope. Most worthless member of NATO, yep

Turkey is on the verge of a much needed makeover. I wish (only a fantasy) that the Kurds would expand their presence in the eastern provinces and force the Turks to re-establish a truly secular government.

Pompeo: Despite tensions, Turkey remains a key US ally
By MATTHEW LEE | Associated Press

SINGAPORE Despite a sharp deterioration in relations over the detention of an American pastor, the United States and Turkey remain valued partners, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday, in an apparent bid to ease tensions that have rocked ties between the NATO allies.
Pompeo told reporters on the sidelines of an Asian security forum in Singapore that the two countries would continue to work with each other in the framework of the alliance and on other matters.
"Turkey is a NATO partner with whom the United States has every intention of continuing to work cooperatively," Pompeo said.

Turkey is a weak ally at best.

Again....Trump is doing the right thing.....just wish he'd shut up.

Turkey today is a questionable ally that therefore has a sick and quickly failing economy

Erdogan is more a Putin type friend than the US and Trump is finally making Turkey accountable unlike past presidents. Russian is getting our F16 technology due to Erdogan policy. Erdogan has locked up Americans that should be freed. He's hurt our hardline stances on Iran. He's definitely not our friend. Educate yourselves before starting threads like this and don't let Trump bias influence you on who is or is not our allies

Turkey has a long history of being an unreliable ally. Just ask all their neighbors. Turkey is, because of their geographical and political position between Europe and Asia, a wildcard. Their presence in NATO has been a tenuous stabilizing force for them. The rise of radical Islam has been a destabilizing force within Turkey the last 3 decades. I'm sure Islamic Turks are torn between staying more secular and prosperous and supporting fellow Muslims and harming relations with non-Muslim trade partners. They are ripe for radical influence.

They are running non Islamic Turks out of the country at an alarming rate. Basically ethnic cleansing.

Turkey should have been sanctioned when they performed their fake coup in order to jail intellectuals and moderates in their country, and suppress the military that is charged with keeping their government leaders from reverting to Theocratic rule. Instead, we 'prayed for Erdogan's safety'.

Yes, and Christians have been treated worse by the government for some years now than Christians in either Syria or Egypt. Not talking here about Islamic terrorist threats but persecution by the government.

That is primarily NATO. Keep in mind that our militaries get along reasonably well. That being said, both militaries sat on their hands while ISIS oil truck caravans moved from both Syria and Iraq through Turkey will little interference.

We get pushed around on every other issue, especially the persecution on the Kurds.
