Wasn't an infrastructure bill a promise made by Trump?

We're 20 months in ( I know, feels like 20 years) and no credible proposal has been made. Why?

https://www.thenation.com/article/shrinking-ambitions-donald-trumps-infrastructure-plan/

Other than shouting about building a wall on the US-Mexico border, one of Donald Trump's most frequently proclaimed promises on the 2016 campaign trail was the launching of a half-trillion-dollar plan to repair America's crumbling infrastructure (employing large numbers of workers in the process). Eighteen months into his administration, no credible proposal for anything near that scale has been made. To the extent that the Trump administration has a plan at all for public investment, it involves pumping up Pentagon spending, not investing in roads, bridges, transportation, better Internet access, or other pressing needs of the civilian economy.

Not that President Trump hasn't talked about investing in infrastructure. Last February, he even proposed a scheme that, he claimed, would boost the country's infrastructure with $1.5 trillion in spending over the next decade. With a typical dose of hyperbole, he described it as "the biggest and boldest infrastructure investment in American history."

Analysts from the Wharton School at the University of PennsylvaniaTrump's alma materbeg to differ. They note that the plan actually involves only $200 billion in direct federal investment, less than one-seventh of the total promised. According to Wharton's experts, much of the extra spending, supposedly leveraged from the private sector as well as state and local governments, will never materialize. In addition, were such a plan launched, it would, they suggest, fall short of its goal by a cool trillion dollars. In the end, the spending levels Trump is proposing would have "little to no impact" on the nation's gross domestic product. To add insult to injury, the president has exerted next to no effort to get even this anemic proposal through Congress, where it's now dead in the water.

There is, however, one area of federal investment on which Trump and the Congress have worked overtime with remarkable unanimity to increase spending: the Pentagon, which is slated to receive more than $6 trillion over the next decade. This year alone increases will bring total spending on the Pentagon and related agencies (like the Department of Energy where work on nuclear warheads takes place) to $716 billion. That $6-trillion, 10-year figure represents more than 30 times as much direct spending as the president's $200 billion infrastructure plan

I'm interested in an infrastructure bill but only if it is for a wall. We spent $800 billion dollars on an infrastructure bill a month or so before Obama's $800+ billion dollar bailout bill. Too much money is being spent.

There are 58,500 structurally deficient bridges in America and at the current pace of bridge investmentit would take at least 21 years before they were all replaced or upgraded.

And you want to waste money on a wall when there is negative migration from south of the border? You want another Minneapolis to happen?

Don't need a wall. Just need Robert Duvall to drop some Agent Orange like he did in that movie.

What you don't understand is that states don't have to use federal money. They can levy taxes for any road construction; they choose to use federal dollars so taxes aren't increased. Or....make more toll roads....let private enterprise tend to it.

The Wall is coming. For decades the establishment Rs and Ds have slacked when it comes to our southern border. It's so evident now that it's a national security and entitlement issue. I don't understand why the Ds (and establishment Rs) and liberals won't support it...drug trafficking and child trafficking can be drastically reduced if not nearly eliminated after the Wall is built. I'm guessing they need problems to justify their expenditures.

Your goal can be accomplished without a wall. The very folks who defend our borders will tell you they need more manpower.

Border governors have tried to help by sending Guard units, but they can, legally, only operate in support functions. That does free up some people, but there's a better, and cheaper solution.

Right now USBP operates a bunch (over 70) internal checkpoints (45-75 miles from the border). They are far, far less likely to bust human and drug traffickers than their counterparts on the actual border. They are a drag on the economy as shipping gets delayed, and a pain in the ass for the Americans who have to go through these even though they haven't crossed a border.

Get rid of wasteful internal checkpoints. Reposition those folks, already trained for the role, to the real border. Let the spend theur time catching criminals, not inconveniencing citizens.

Saves tax $, increases freedom. Hmm, sounds suspiciously libertarian so it probably won't happen.

Add a fee to peoples vehicle registration for road and bridge repair. Add 10 cents per gallon specifically for road and bridge repair. Probably makes too much sense to charge the people who use it to maintain it right?

Agree with retasking BP. I've got a BU friend who routinely gets "ride alongs" with BP...like out in the brush running down on foot catching illegals. They tell him retasking with a Wall will help greatly. From the state gov't side, we do budget Troopers for hitches on the border...at least the ones I know who work regular shifts in their districts then go do a hitch out in the brush.

Negative immigration from south of the border? Bless your heart.
You want a wall more than bridge repair and other infrastructure improvements. Bless your heart.

States can repair bridges. Border security is a national security problem.
Stares repair bridges with federal money. Keep digging.

What you don't understand is that states don't have to use federal money. They can levy taxes for any road construction; they choose to use federal dollars so taxes aren't increased. Or....make more toll roads....let private enterprise tend to it.
Can't Texas build its own wall on his own border without federal help?

Let's get our shovels!
Chuckle. You'd better if you want one built because that's the only way you're going to get a stupid wall.

But only in support roles. They can spot a crosser, they cannot apprehend.

Oh yes they do. They are generally apprehended on other charges...drug trafficking, child trafficking, etc. There's ways to apprehend. Y'all need to get out more often.

There's lies, damn lies, and statistics. So either the data is wrong or the pics from earlier are fake news or you can grow up down there and travel extensively down there like me and believe what you see. Take your pick.
