A police officer was fatally shot in Georgia on Saturday after he responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle, and an 18-year-old has been charged in connection with the killing, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The officer, Antwan Toney, 30, and other officers were approaching the vehicle, which was parked near a middle school in Snellville, Ga., about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta, when shots were fired from the vehicle, the police said.
"The officers didn't have their weapons drawn or anything at that point," Sgt. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department said at a news conference. "They were exiting their patrol cars and walking up to the suspect vehicle. They had not even made contact with them yet when the shots rang out."
Isaiah Pretlow, 19, of Snellville had been driving the vehicle when the shooting happened around 2:30 p.m., the police said, but they believe Tafahree Maynard, 18, also of Snellville, fatally shot Officer Toney. Police officers fired back, but it was unclear whether any of the people inside were hit.
Mr. Pretlow then drove the car a short distance before crashing, and as many as four occupants fled on foot, the police said.
During a search of the area about a half-hour later, a police officer encountered Mr. Pretlow, who pointed a gun at the officer, and the officer fired shots at him, the police said. Mr. Pretlow fled into a wooded area and was later taken into custody by the United States Marshals around 11:30 p.m.

Early Sunday, the police said Mr. Pretlow had been charged with aggravated assault based on the encounter after the fatal shooting. They said they were still looking for Mr. Maynard, who has been charged with aggravated assault and felony murder in connection with Officer Toney's death. He is considered armed and dangerous, police said.
