Senate Leaders Reach Deal That Offers Possible Path to Reopen Government

WASHINGTON The Senate will vote Thursday on two separate bills that would bring an immediate end to the partial government shutdown: one backed by President Trump that includes $5.7 billion for his border wall and another that would simply extend funding for shuttered agencies through Feb. 8.
The plan, a compromise between Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, and Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, offers the first hint of a path out of the partial shutdown, which is now in its fifth week and has left 800,000 federal workers without pay. The two announced it Tuesday afternoon on the Senate floor.
"People are saying isn't there a way out of this mess, isn't there a way to relieve the burden on the 800,000 federal workers not getting paid, isn't there a way to get government services open first and debate what we should do for border security later?" Mr. Schumer said. "Well, now there's a way."

If you scale the numbers down to a lower middle class understanding, Trump is asking for $57 out of an annual $44,070 budget to complete missing sections of the wall.

Schumer and Pelosi are playing resist. This is 100% on them.

Schumer just made a deal and appears to be the amount Trump wanted

If he keeps enough Democratic senators in line to pass the bill with wall funding. Other bill will likely get veto. Plus it will need to make it through the House.

New take from the NYTimes. They have agreed to disagree and will put both bills on the floor.

Predictions now are that neither bill will pass the senate.

Senate Leaders Plan Competing Bills to End Shutdown

WASHINGTON Senate Republicans and Democrats on Tuesday offered the first glimmers of a potential resolution to the five-week partial government shutdown, scheduling procedural votes Thursday on President Trump's proposal to spend $5.7 billion on a border wall and a competing bill that would fund the government through Feb. 8.
The plan for the Senate to consider the dueling proposals reflects the first bipartisan action since the shutdown began on legislation that could end the impasse, offering each party a chance to press its proposal. But the move by Senators Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, and Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, is far from a guarantee of breaking the gridlock.
With most Republicans united behind Mr. Trump's insistence that any legislation to reopen the government include money for a border wall and most Democrats opposed to the linkage, neither measure is likely to draw the 60 votes required to advance.

I thought our leader said the shut down was all on him. Something about being proud to shut it down and "the mantle is on me". How is it 100% on the dems? What is wrong with my middle class understanding of believing what a president says? He will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it.

Well said.

So if someone is on a $44k/yr salary and just got their apartment broken into. The $57 would be like putting better locks on your doors.

But what kind of lock is it going to be? Who's going to install it? How many keys will you have? You don't just rush into these things without a plan.

Fearmongering is always easy, but the locks-or-nothing approach doesn't address the real problem: what to do with the intruder who's still on your couch. If you're really serious about security, obviously you need to amend the lease and make him a legal tenant. Then we can talk about this big, beautiful "lock them out" scheme that you keep fantasizing about.

And we're only going $13,000 more into debt each year. In lower middle class terms, were about 2 years from chapter 11.

Why don't we cut $57 from our defense budget. Buy a few less bullets this year for the gun cabinet. And then allocate it to a wall. Seems like a logical solution.

Because in democrats eyes, that would mean Trump wins, and they can't let Trump win at anything, even if it were good for our country.

Similar to how republicans were towards Obama.

Well now, there you go trying to hold donald to his word. That wouldn't bode well here. Good luck with that. It'll be fun to read the responses.

Come on Sam, look at your source..Sarah Palin's site? Not saying she's wrong but since she can see Russia from her front porch, I bet she could see mitch blocked a bill to end the shutdown.....4 times. I'm on a cell so can't post a link but it's not hard to find. I think even fox aired it, and you know if fox aired it or donald said it, it has to be true.

I know Republicans have been blocking bills to end the shutdown. The point is that they wanted to pay these workers anyway. Apparently Democrats don't want anyone to get paid until the shutdown ends.

Trump, Congress Reach Tentative Deal to Reopen Government for Three Weeks
Plan under consideration would only extend current funding for border security

WASHINGTONPresident Trump and congressional leaders have reached a tentative deal to reopen the government for three weeks while negotiations over border security funding continue, according to congressional aides.

The White House said Mr. Trump would make remarks shortly about the shutdown.
The deal wouldn't provide immediate funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, administration officials said.
It wasn't clear what the framework for border-security discussions in the next three weeks would look like.

The move would amount to at least a temporary concession by Mr. Trump to Democrats, as it would provide no immediate funding for a border wall.
