According to the AP Virginia Government Ralph Northam has informed his staff he has weathered the storm and will be remaining as governor to complete his term.
Quote:

(AP 4:10pm EST) A senior official in Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's administration says the governor has told his top staff that he does not plan to resign over a racist photo despite intense pressure to step down.
For every political with an 'R' after your name, if you have any pride or guts, print Northam's statement, make numerous copies, and laminate them all. If and when you're asked about anything remotely involving you and racism (which you will by because you're a Republican), keep your mouth shut, hand them a copy, and walk away.

Republicans of the past 20 years never call on Republicans to resign no matter the circumstances anyway. Hence there is no need for a Republican office holder to take your advice.

I am glad he is staying. It is good that he remains one of the faces of the Democratic Party.

On another note, it sounds like Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax now has a second accuser. Apparently a girl while he was in college at Duke. Sounds like there is huge push for him to step down. Bottom line is, the two white guys get to stay but the black guy has gotta go. Just gotta love the Democratic Party. The more things change, the more they stay the same. LOL!!!!

Lol he isn't the face of the Democratic Party. What may have helped him is when the Republican Senate Majority leader of the state got busted having been the editor of a highly racist yearbook at VMI and the GOP did not say a thing. They suddenly went back to the racism is no big deal and people should move on position. They wouldn't call on him to resign naturally. The issue went silent here as well all the sudden when it came out.

You Democrats have two huge problems that if you don't fix, Trump will win in a landslide in 2020. One of them is Socialism and the other one is the killing of newborn babies.

Had you people left well enough alone, Roe vs. Wade might have survived. This latest move by a handful of states celebrating full-term abortions is going to cause the Supreme Court to accelerate a challenge and possibly overturn it. You damn sure had better keep Ginsburg alive or Roe vs. Wade is finished. The Dems just don't know when to quit.

2. Are you in favor of third trimester/ full-term abortions? Yes or no?

I don't think any of you guys are doing any good for anybody. This bickering just in this thread is exactly what we see at the national level. If it won't stop at a local level and won't stop at a national level, what hope is there that this country will ever come to its senses? Neither side has enough support on its own to do anything of substance that is sustainable.

The comment that the guy in Virginia has weathered the storm and that it won't hurt the Democrats is likely wishful thinking. The panel discussion (all Democrats) this afternoon on Chuck Todd's MTP Daily was adamant that these guys have to go even if it means a Republican is governor for a couple of years. They are certain this guy will be the story of the party as long as he stays. You can't be the party that portrays itself on the moral high ground and then have such a blatantly double standard. On the Rep side you also can't continuously point to this situation and criticize for things that you have been guilty of all too often. Three of those fingers point right back to you.

Nobody wins. It is a loser's game and both parties are determined to play it. IMO, the only way the Reps can possibly win the White House in 2020 is either because Trump gets removed from office or the Reps come to their senses and see that running him again is clueless futility born out of ego. You don't have to have Trump to promote a conservative agenda. The only way the Dems can definitely lose is to run someone with an agenda like AOC and I don't think they are that naive. It doesn't mean that we don't end up with any better choices in 2020 than we had in 2016, but I don't see how it could be any worse.

If you are hard left or hard right or even remotely close to that, you do not constitute a winnable majority in this country. You had better learn how to compromise with each other, be civil to one another, and figure out how to live in an environment where you don't get all you want, but also one where we are all better off than in this stink that we have had much of the last decade. Kevin Steele football wasn't this pathetically screwed up.

Blackie as you said the Democrats are all calling for this guy to resign. When the whole party is against him, it is hard to say he hurts the party. It clearly isn't credible to say he is the face of a party that is about 100% for his removal from office. Especially when there are about 100 more prominent Democrats nationally. Incidentally I think his attempt to hold on won't work because all the Democrats have called on him to resign. They are all calling for Fairfax to resign as well now.

As always, blackie, I agree with MOST of what you have said. Where I do take exception is that there are no longer blurred lines or gray areas between the two parties. If I have to choose, I will choose life over death and Capitalism over Socialism. On these two issues, to me, it is choosing between right and wrong.

Yes, the extremes have screwed this country royally (the extreme Left and the extreme Right) and that is how in 2016 we ended up with two HORRIBLE candidates to pick from. Trump's performance on the economy has been exceptional but he is greatly lacking in other areas, particularly foreign policy. His reigning in of Kim Jong Un has been spectacular. His ignoring the murder of a U.S. resident journalist by Saudi Arabia is unacceptable. I worry about our current relationship with our allies and especially our relationship with China and their 1.4 billion people.

If I had to vote today from the current gaggle of candidates, I would hold my nose and vote for Trump again. Unless someone rises up that can somewhat distance themselves from the extremes of both parties, Trump will win again. Don't know who that person might be, but I hope they are out there.

That being said, I want you to know that I like and respect PartyBear as a poster and as a person. We just don't agree on much when it comes to politics. And that is okay. PartyBear and I certainly never call each other names or throw profanities at one another. Discussing our differences, I think, is a good thing.

AckAckAckAck!!!! I remember. I was pissed at Briles for running the read option with our third string QB and not having our boys prepared to play one of the worst Texas teams in recent history. Little did either one of us know that would be Briles' last regular season game at Baylor. Damn, that seems like so long ago at this point.

Me too. These are my sentiments exactly:

I will not pretend to speak for every African-American, but for many of us, there is simply no outrage over that blackface photograph on Northam's yearbook page. Of course, it's racist and offensive. But many of us who live in blackface every day aren't shocked to learn that a white politician has racist skeletons in his closet. What many African-Americans care about is what Northam has done for them lately.

Apparently, black people in Virginia thought he would be their best ally when 87 percent of them turned out to vote him into office in 2017.

He agreed with them that Confederate monuments have no right in public spaces. Since taking office, he has worked to expand Medicaid to serve the poor. He has helped restore voting rights to felons, politically empowering more black men.

The African-Americans in Virginia have a right to feel betrayed by a friend. But the question they and black people across the country should be asking themselves is: What purpose would Northam's resignation serve?
As our country engages in a bitter dispute over race, African-Americans have to figure out what we want the end game to be. If it is to enlighten white people about issues of race and help them to understand what it is like to walk in our shoes, then we must allow second chances.

While each case is different, we must consider whether to hold someone hostage as a racist for life because of a mistake made before they became aware. We must decide if it is in our best interest to have someone who has worked to make amends over the years standing with us against those who refuse to accept change.

This is a summary of AOC's Green New Deal resolution on which every House member and Senator will have to vote:

Every Democrat in Washington will get to go on the record in favor of abolishing air travel, outlawing steaks, forcing all American homeowners to retrofit their houses, putting every miner, oil rigger, livestock rancher and gas-station attendant out of a job, and spending trillions and trillions more tax money.

A back of the envelope calculation indicates and 300% to 500% increase in the cost of electricity

And then there's Medicare for all in a government-run health care program that would do away with private insurance.

How would you vote?

That is actually not a summary of the plan. I'm not even going to be charitable and say that is just your interpretation. That is actually a lie. Post the actual document. Incidentally every house and Senste member only vote on bills. So no one will vote on her actual document and what it says. They will vote on bills.

Go ahead and be triggered and intimidated by one freshman house member.

For your convenience: https://www.gp.org/gnd_full
https://apps.npr.org/documents/document.html?id=5729035-Green-New-Deal-FAQ

Excerpts - What do you think?
The Green New Deal starts with transitioning to 100% green renewable energy (no nukes or natural gas) by 2030. It would immediately halt any investment in fossil fuels (including natural gas) and related infrastructure. The Green New Deal will guarantee full employment and generate up to 20 million new, living-wage jobs, as well as make the government the employer of last resort with a much-needed major public jobs program.

Building on the concept of FDR's New Deal, we call for a massive mobilization of our communities, government and the people on the scale of World War II to transition our energy system and economy to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030, including a complete phase out of fossil fuels, fracked gas and nuclear power.

The Green New Deal is not only a major step towards ending unemployment for good, but also a tool to fight the corporate takeover of our democracy and exploitation of the poor and people of color. It will provide a just transition, with a priority on providing resources to workers displaced from the fossil fuel industry, low-income communities and communities of color most impacted by climate change. The Green New Deal will provide assistance to workers and communities that now have workers dependent on the fossil fuel, nuclear and weapons industries, and to the developing world as it responds to climate change damage caused by the industrial world.

The transition to 100% clean energy will foster democratic control of our energy system, rather than maximizing profits for energy corporations, banks and hedge funds. It will promote clean energy as a human right and a common good. It will include community, worker and public ownership, as well as small businesses and non-profits.
We will cut military spending by at least half to bring our troops currently stationed in over 800 bases worldwide home to their families, deploying our valued servicemen and women in their own communities to build up our country's future and prosperity here at home. Maintaining bases all over the world to safeguard fossil fuel supplies or to shore up repressive oil monarchies could no longer be justified as "protecting American interests."
