If you pay no taxes you're voting your paycheck

If you take in more from government than you pay then you shouldn't be allowed to vote

Why would we want to limit the franchise of any fully grown American (not including felons in this particular question)? Would #2 exclude the elderly on SSA even though they paid into it but now receive more than they paid into it? What if we reach a point where 1929 happens again and suddenly unemployment reaches 25% and those 25% are now silenced? What about those that had government jobs and were always net takers? What about soldiers? Who is to say that those that pay taxes aren't voting their paycheck?

Interesting topic for sure but something that Jeffersonian and even Jacksonian principals traditionally led the way in abolishing the land owning requirements in the early 19th century for most of the country. I certainly haven't seen any political will for such a change and doubt we will in the next 20-30 years.

First problem is the idea of qualifying some citizens to vote, but denying others.

Suppose someone is a disabled veteran, living in an assisted living center and with the state and federal governments paying for his room and board.

I would not tell that veteran he did not have the right to vote.

Also, once we start qualifying voters on bases of preference, how long before those in power use that to exclude undesirable demographics?

"Thanks for your 20 years of income tax contributions. It is certainly a shame you can't vote"

How about those of us that do vote, hold our elected officials accountable?

Teaching history and civics would be a great place to start.

It is a better idea than what we have now. But it has some problems. A few off the top of my head:

1. How would the poor be represented effectively?
2. How does this fix the current issue where a very rich man's voting power is far greater than another man's as they can buy candidates or influence how they act once in office?
3. How to ensure the landowners are knowledgeable and informed voters?

Good to know some people are frozen in time.
Why not dump the electoral college?

What's wrong with the current system? Why try to screw with voting rights?

The electoral college is designed to give equity across all states so that states that have large cities don't dominate the voting. Life in South Dakota is very different than NYC.

A dumb person has the same voting power as a smart person.
As I said before, a very rich person's vote counts more than a regular person because they can buy candidates.
It favors welfare programs and socialism due to numbers which is contrary to a capitalist system.

Similar to the topic: if I own homes in 4 states, shouldn't I be allowed to vote in those states elections?

I'm the owner of Malwart Ind. I hire mostly young people. I don't pay much but, I offer healthcare and living quarters in trailers that follow us from job to job. My employees move as the work moves from state to state and season to season so it doesn't benefit them to try to purchase in any one location.

As Earnie Ford sang, my employees owe their soul to the company store.

Pretty stupid ideas.

Why not just allow votes from states that pay more to the federal government in taxes than they receive back? Let the states carrying their weight vote for president.

Too much of a slippery slope there.

Now, do I think we'd have better politicians if more successful and intelligent people voted? Yes!

I do not want to keep any citizen of the US from voting (except felons and severe mental health issues in treatment facilities).

I do want to keep non citizens and the dead from voting.

I also would like voters to be more educated/ up to date on issues. I know there is no way to require this or force this but I think we can all agree there are too many idiots in our country that vote and don't stay current on the issues.

I am all for fiscal responsibility but when a disaster hits say Louisiana or California, should the rest of the US help them out or should we say they must pull their own weight? Also, do we really want huge disparities in services from state to state or do we want some degree of uniformity across the nation?

Wonder if there's a higher percentage of republican or Democrat voters that are property owners?

Wonder what the percent is of democrat and republican voter that are on entitlements?

On entitlements, it's pretty close. Don't have property ownership data in front of me.

However, your sick, vile, and demented interpretation of how a republic operates is, as I said, sick, vile and demented. Your not so latent racism is disgusting. Your inability to harbor decent thoughts of people who disagree with you is laughable. Your shtick is petty and comically close to a true caricature of what people think about an old, white republican.

All this coming from a guy who has voted Republican more than I have independent, and certainly more than Dem. You are a sad soul Flarda. Go gata

I'll go you one better. You should be allowed a vote for each dollar you pay to D.C. and that is in tax dollars, not contributions to candidate.

If you don't contribute you don't get a vote. Hey, to hell with the Constitution. This is todays world. The framers never envisioned such a free loading diverse society.

The more voters the better, that's why I think even citizens who are felons should be allowed to vote. Two states allow prisoners to vote from prison; 21 restore voting rights upon completion of their sentence. You break the social contract then you suffer specific consequences. You repay that debt to society and you get your voting privileges back.

As I've said many times there are two things I'd do to improve the current system, and neither involves taking away the right to vote. One: ranked voting. Two: taxes are revenue only. No spoils to contributors in the form of tax breaks.

Edit: Holy crap, this thread has wrought another miracle: I just saw an ad for Libertarian T-shirts.

The Founding Fathers had little faith in the masses ability to govern themselves.

That's why they established a republic instead of a democracy.

When Andrew Jackson became the first man elected to the White House primarily by direct vote of the people......John Quincy Adams was aghast.

Times have proven him right .

Considering what JQA did to claim the White House in 1824, I would not recommend calling him "right" in matters of political ethics.

But yeah, Quincy stole 1824, an interesting case that most people know nothing about.
