The negative reviews I've seen have not been about it's values, but that it isn't well done.
I read the book, and was kind of "meh" about it. It's a remarkable story of the author's rise and what he overcame. But I didn't see much positive in his family, particularly his grandmother.
There was certainly nothing uplifting in a spiritual sense.
I live in the midst of that culture, and see much more the underside than the author presents.
Better examples of a culture gone to seed are OAN and Newsmax.

I think we just disagree on Elegy. I thought it explained a lot about the Trump voters turning out against Hilary, but I see where you're coming from
