It's not uncommon that people are for "their" free speech but not yours.
Actually, it is unprecedented what we are seeing.
The attempt to ban rap music back in the 80's?
Kidding (sorta), but there are similarities.
Pretty sure Will Smith (Fresh Prince) never had a problem. I think you are confusing gangsta with rap.
Doesn't make suppression a good idea, but accuracy matters.
Haha its all rap, but 2 Live Crew was the group I was referring to. Shop owner was arrested just for selling that album. There was gangsta rap backlash as well. Im sure it was a bipartisan effort back then anyway. Just an observation.
2 Live Crew then, later, 1991 specifically, Body Count (Ice-T) regarding the Cop Killa track. That track bugged me...mostly because Ice was just way better than that. Escape from the Killing Fields is just fantastic though lots of that Original OG album is pretty incredible.
Then of course, you had Bone Thugs with their intro..."We're not against rap, we're not against rappers...but we are against those thugs". It's a line from one of Rev. Calvin Butt's sermons. He was the leader of a church in Harlem. The next line was "But we are against those thugs who disgrace our community, our women, who disgrace our culture, and who have absolutely nothing of redemptive value to offer except the legacy of violence and sexual assault and foul language."
There is an AWESOME listen about Rev Butt's here:
