Let's hope the rest of the country embraces honesty....

Alameda County's new COVID death toll is 25% lower than thought
County health officials reviewed COVID-19 death records and found 411 cases that were "clearly not" caused by the disease.

In announcing the changes to the data, the county used the example of a resident who tested positive for COVID-19 but died in a car accident. Under the original definition, that person's death would have been included in the total number of COVID-19 deaths. Balram said she couldn't say if that actual scenario played out in Alameda County.

Alameda County used "died with COVID" as a barometer rather than "died from COVID."

You are assuming that other counties used that broad definition, not sure that is a good assumption. And even if it is, it means that 450,000 Americans died from COVID. So honestly it was a horrible problem any way you look at it.

EDIT: Also a misleading thread title; the article does not say that any car wreck deaths were counted as COVID deaths.

If you're telling him that he's assuming that other counties use that definition and it's not a good assumption, then that must mean that you're assuming other counties did not use the same definition, which is yet another assumption.

The point is that the Alameda County has revised its covid death numbers because they were misrepresented. This should cause enough concern for other counties to audit their death certificates so we can get an accurate death toll as a result of covid

Sam tells me the deaths that were counted as COVID are very accurate and based on science, so this must not be true.

No, I am saying that one should not assume that either standard (died with covid/died from covid) applies to "the rest of the country."

And other counties don't need an audit for this if they were using "died from COVID" all along.

This doesn't have any bearing on the national numbers. The county is just correcting its early real time estimates to reflect the data used by the state, the NVSS, and ultimately the CDC.

There was no audit of death certificates. It was a correction of early estimates in light of the death certificates.

FTR, there are two known cases where victims of vehicle crashes were listed as Covid deaths. One was a motorcycle crash in Florida, which was later corrected in a similar process to the one described in the OP. The other was a car crash in Pennsylvania, where the victim was admitted to the hospital with non-fatal injuries from the accident but later died of Covid. So the only known case of "car wreck Covid" was, ironically, a death caused by Covid.

Regardless, you have to congratulate Dems for pinning the Covid Crisis on Trump. They ousted a sitting President. That is impressive.
