The Amish and COVID

Almost no one has looked at how the Amish handled the COVID outbreak. Given the Amish mistrust of government, public education and the health system, it's no shock that the Amish ignored shutdowns, mask mandates and other government actions.

Turns out the Amish did no worse than cities/states with oppressive shut-downs and controls, at least according to Sharyl Attkinson. Attkinson has worked for CNN and CBS and received both Emmy and Edward R Murrow awards.

Interviews included some telling quotes from Mennonite leader Calvin Lapp.

https://fullmeasure.news/news/shows/amish-covid

A key quote from Lapp:

" It's a worse thing to quit working than dying. Working is more important than dying. But to shut down and say that we can't go to church, we can't get together with family, we can't see our old people in the hospital, we got to quit working? It's going completely against everything that we believe. You're changing our culture completely to try to act like they wanted us to act the last year, and we're not going to do it."

I think that attitude resonates with a lot of folks.

You don't need to be draconian, you do need to be pro-active. Not being pro active leads excuses for draconianism.

Don't wait to for someone else to solve the problem, you might not like it when someone else finally does.

You cannot trust Amish reporting anything more than you can trust NK reporting. In fact, I might trust the NKs more. Im in Amish country probably 10 days a month.

I do not know about the Amish reporting, but it is pretty clear that the lockdowns, masks, etc., really had no impact on the response to the virus. There is a reason experts never promoted such a response before and got the idea from a high school science project.

The thing is, we never really shut down. Everyone still got out to the grocery store, went to the doctor, got gas, many invited friends over, family, went to work...

So all we do was slow the spread a bit. There is data that suggests we successfully did that. And that was important, because not everyone who was at risk contracted the virus. Many were able to get the vaccine before the virus, which is saving lives.

I heartily agree everyone has now had their chance, and we should not shut down anymore unless hospitals are overwhelmed. Now that everyone has a choice, get the vaccine or don't, the government needs to let us all make that choice.

Not hard to have a story cooler than an Amish story. No offense to them, but their lifestyle isn't exactly cool.

My gawd, are you blind?

Plenty of businesses and activities were shut down.

Wow, just wow.

You really can't read. I already explained, but you asked for the explanation?

When your butthole decides it has spewed enough over your keyboard for one day, and shuts down, do you know what that means? It stops. When it goes to 1/2 of the posting, sure some posts didn't happen, but can you really call it a shut down?

Sounds like those people who say we never really tried Communism, like East Germany or Cuba or North Korea don't count.

Either way this could be a good solution to the vaccine controversy. Just keep the spreadnecks in their own isolated communities, away from bars, restaurants, airports, schools, etc., and let them pay all their medical expenses up front. I'm sure no one here would object?

Except they don't stay in their communities actually.

I know they don't completely, but if what they do is roughly equivalent to "essential" business then it's as good as a lockdown.

Around 50% of the women and probably 80% of the boys/men work outside of the community. They travel in groups, usually driven by a Mennonite (but often by locals). Typically you see them in baking, house keeping, building, roofing, etc.

Go to any WalMart within 30 miles of Amish country and they are everywhere.

People were hammering nails and buying groceries during the lockdowns too. What they weren't doing was crowding into movie theaters and whooping it up in packed bars until the wee hours. Public schools shut down. Air travel was greatly reduced. Pretty familiar lifestyle if you're Amish.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. The hilarious part is that you guys think Florida Mike is right wing. You should try hanging with the Amish. I'm telling you that way more of them died from Covid than you think and vastly more than they would ever report.

Their distrust of government is alt right and alt left levels.

What I'm driving at is that it doesn't matter how it appears because the appearance is anything but the truth.

If NK said only 20 people died you wouldn't be saying "we should do what the NKs did" rather "I don't believe them". That's exactly what you should say regarding any Amish study.

I don't disagree. My original point was sarcastic anyway.

Thanks.

So people living their life as though there is nothing unusual happening, who basically don't acknowledge Covid, is a spreadneck.

What about other people who are shot hesitant like my wife, but who wears a mask everywhere they go, disinfects their hands everywhere they go and are concerned by people who won't wear a mask in close quarters public places.

Don't forget, that you'll have to include black people in that group too. You know, so they won't consort with your kind.

Maybe all the anti-mandate haters can pack their **** and start their own community somewhere far far away so they're protected from the unwashed. I hear Chaz is nice this time of year.

45% of black people have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
