SicEm365’s David Smoak has confirmed the report that Baylor basketball forward Matthew Mayer will withdraw his name from the 2021 NBA Draft and return to Baylor for his senior year. The news was originally reported by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

Mayer, a projected starter for Baylor after coming off the bench his first three seasons at Baylor, will likely be projected to be a first-round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft with increased playing time in his final season as a Bear.

Mayer has averaged 8.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 16 minutes per game for Baylor, which won the national championship in April. In the NCAA Tournament Mayer averaged 8.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

Mayer was one of 69 players announced as having accepted an invite to attend the NBA combine in Chicago, which starts Tuesday, but has changed course and withdrawn his name from the event, a source told ESPN.

The NCAA deadline for players to withdraw from the NBA draft and maintain college eligibility is July 7.

Smart decision, IMO. Play full games as a starter, play well, improve at the FT line, and ball-handling, and play his way into the lottery next year. Added bonus: he gets to attend with his sister!

I guess he had to mullet over before making his final decision.

Wise move, Matthew. He will be a big reason why Baylor will be a Big 12 and National threat again this coming season. He is smart to stay where he is and get another year of seasoning. It will pay off for him.

Does he go mullet all year or save for the tournament ? Even better the whole team should go mullet in an epic sign of unity.

I like how Drew has been trying to schedule a game against Duke. I hope it happens while Coach K is still there.

He has one year to commit to the process and become the player-leader he needs to be. His own basketball future is dependent on his performance this year. I hope he accepts the challenge. He has big shoes to fill.

Speaking of big shoes to fill - for father's day, my youngest Baylor graduate son bought me a signed pair of Maceo Teague's game shoe. It is a cool green, but what surprised me is how big his feet hard. He must wear at least a sign 14. They are huge!
