Victory over Cal places Lady Bears back in Sweet 16 to face Louisville

WACO, Texas — The No. 1-seed Baylor Lady Bears (32-3) are advancing to the Sweet 16 after dominating No. 9-seed California 86-46 last night at the Ferrell Center in Waco.

This matchup was Baylor’s 12th consecutive NCAA tournament win at home, and the Lady Bears are set to take on No. 4 -eed Louisville (29-7) at 8 p.m. on Friday in Oklahoma City.

Big scorers for Baylor against Cal included senior forward Nina Davis and redshirt senior guard Alexis Prince with 16 points each. Sophomore post Beatrice Mompremier had eight total rebounds and junior guard Kristy Wallace had 10 points and nine assists.

Although the Golden Bears struggled against the Lady Bears, even going six and a half minutes without scoring in the second quarter, sophomore center/forward Kristine Angiwe scored a game-high 20 points and also recorded 11 rebounds.

Last night’s matchup was the second time in five years that Cal lost in the second round of the tournament to Baylor in Waco.

With a short break between games, the Lady Bears will head out to take on the Louisville Cardinals, who beat out No. 5-seed Tennessee with a 75-64 win on last night at home. This will be Baylor’s third meeting with the Cardinals in the Sweet 16 in the last nine seasons.

The Lady Bears will need to watch out for junior forward Mariya Moore and sophomore guard Asia Durr who boated 19 and 23 points respectively against Tennessee, as well as junior forward Myisha Hines-Allen, who had 13 rebounds and 14 points.

If Baylor defeats Louisville, the Lady Bears will advance to the Elite Eight and contend with the winner of the No. 3-seed Washington (29-5) and No. 2-seed Mississippi State (31-4) matchup.
