Baylor Goalie wins Big 12 keeper of the week | Big 12 Soccer Roundup

Baylor graduate goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt took home her sixth career weekly award from the Big 12 conference thanks to her efforts in the opening week of the season.

No other Bear has won more than three such awards for the soccer team. This is even more impressive considering the conference only introduced the goalkeeper of the week award last season.

Despite a tough loss for the team in their opener against Minnesota, Wandt had a strong showing. In Fargo on Sunday, she kept her 33rd career clean sheet which is good for fourth-best all-time in the Big 12 and number one for Baylor according to Baylor’s official press release.

During this first week of play Wandt also became the career leader in minutes played by a goalkeeper at Baylor.

Other Big 12 weekly award winners for week 1 were Gracie Brian and Brandi Peterson, both from TCU, for offense and defense. Meanwhile, Lauren McConnell, one of Iowa State’s seven freshmen, took home freshman of the week.

Based just on these awards it is easy to see that the #8 Horned Frogs had a good week. They destroyed SFA 7-0 before a top-10 showdown against Texas A&M. They prevailed 2-1 and showed that they are frontrunners for the Big 12 title this year. TCU jumped to #6 in this week's polls.

Another conference favorite, West Virginia, had a tougher start to the year. After a 4-0 warmup against Buffalo, the Mountaineers fell 1-0 to the #4 Virginia Cavaliers but stayed at #12 in the polls.

Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State all won their openers and dropped their second games.

Kansas State did the opposite, losing to Weber State and beating Omaha.

The Jayhawks drew with Drake before hosting future Baylor opponent Wisconsin and losing 1-0.

Texas Tech did better than most in the conference coming out of the first week with a win and a draw.

Texas lost big in their opener against UCF, who are now ranked #19. They drew their second game against the Florida Gators 1-1 in double overtime.

Looking forward, there’s not a lot to be learned from one week of matches. However, Baylor can definitely make a run at the top half of the conference this year. TCU and West Virginia should be duking it out for the top spot, followed by Oklahoma State (who really challenged themselves with a fringe top-25 team in Pitt).

Everyone below that has a shot to take a step up the ladder this year. If I had to put a prediction out there right now, I think Baylor improves on their 3-3-3 conference record from last year.

That's the latest news from Big 12 soccer.

I hope y’all come out for Baylor's home opener Thursday night against Nebraska!
