Late rally not enough for Baylor to defeat Washington in game one

Game 1: Washington 5, Baylor 4

The No. 21/22 Baylor baseball team (18-7) dropped a midweek matchup 15-9 against UTSA on Tuesday at home, tarnishing their undefeated midweek streak. The Bears struggled from the beginning of the game and in the end were unable to catch up to the Roadrunners, despite a seven-run rally in the ninth inning.

Baylor will seek redemption this weekend for an on-the-road weekend series against Washington in Seattle. The first game is set to start at 8 p.m. on Friday, the second at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and the third at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

In the loss, senior designated hitter Matt Menard recorded a team-high-tying eighth multi-hit game, and sophomore outfielder T.J. Raguse scored three of Baylor’s nine runs, making this his fourth straight multi-hit game.

On Monday, Menard was selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2017 senior CLASS award, which is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, and aims to recognize leadership in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Winners will be announced at the 2017 College World Series in June.

Baylor is currently ranked sixth overall in the Big 12 with a conference record of 2-4, and has a winning percentage of .720. Although the series against the Huskies is not a conference matchup, Baylor currently trails 1-2 in their all-time series.

Washington’s record this season is 14-9, and while they are unranked, Baylor should be on the lookout for pitcher Noah Bremer, who has allowed two or fewer runs in 26 of 35 career starts. Also, the Huskies’ defense has kept their opponents at 2-for-16 on attempted stolen bases, and junior catcher Joey Morgan has thrown out 9 out of 10 runners on stolen base attempts.

After this weekend’s series, Baylor will pick back up at home with a midweek game against Lamar at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
