WACO, Texas — Baylor (6-1) becomes bowl eligible with a 38-24 thrashing of No. 19 BYU (5-2) on Homecoming thanks to 306 yards on the ground.

The first annual Doctrine Dispute, Bible Battle or Gospel Giddy-Up  (yes I read the forum) was a blowout. The homecoming crowd had the liberty of beating traffic by the third quarter, but hell, let’s be honest, this is Waco and beating traffic is impossible.

That aside should put into perspective how dominant this game was. I was thinking about a convenient route home while the clock still had 15 minutes on it.

Baylor amassed 537 yards of offense, allowed zero sacks and boasted five sacks of their own. Lest it is overlooked, Abram Smith tallied 188 rushing yards and three scores. Smith and Dillon Doyle combined for five touchdowns — Baylor had five touchdowns total. That’s an elite offensive linebacker corps.

The first half felt like Grant Teaff was on the Bears’ sideline. Baylor pounded the rock, scored a touchdown with a fullback and stuffed any chance of BYU running the football. I kid you not, BYU had -1 rushing yards in the first half. You, o sweet Bear, had more rushing yards than the Cougars. Nicely done.

Moreover, the Baylor offense deterred a wild BYU contingency and the Cougar defense with 305 yards of offense, 132 of which came on the ground. The Bears also ran 44 plays to BYU’s 22 and took 19:21 off the game clock to the Cougars’ 10:39. That helped the good guys to a 17-7 halftime lead — good soup.

The second half was about as tough on the Cougars as the first half. Baylor once again ran all over the field with Smith and Trestan Ebner to the tune of 173 more combined yards. That, coupled with just enough control over the clock and consistent defense, led to the 38-24 final score.

Well, that was fun. The BYU crowd certainly showed up big time, and my grandpa Rick ran the stadium aux with hits like ‘The Boys are Back in Town’ and ‘Blitzkrieg Bop.’ Even still, the Bears fought through… home adversity? and got the win.

McLane Stadium should be rocking again when top 20 Baylor meets unranked and irrelevant Texas on the Brazos in two weeks. Until then, get some sleep, the Bears just added another game to this year’s schedule.
