QB with rich pedigree wants Baylor offer

As Baylor continues its hunt for a quarterback from the 2018 class, Zadock Dinkelmann patiently waits for an offer.

Since his eighth-grade year, Dinkelmann has been in the recruiting spotlight in some capacity. He was a 6-foot-4 junior high school student when he landed his first offer from LSU. He received the offer on Feb. 21, 2014, and he committed to the Tigers a day later.

Now, as a junior in the middle of spring workouts at Somerset High School, just outside of San Antonio, Dinkelmann is looking for a college home. He decommitted from LSU on Jan. 10 and is working to build his offer list.

The pro-style quarterback hopes Baylor can be a part of his search soon.

"A Baylor offer would be awesome. It would be an in-state offer from an explosive offense," Dinkelmann said. "The coaches did great at their previous places. Of course, you want to be a part of that."

So who is Dinkelmann? He's a shade under 6-foot-6, 225 pounds and a pocket-passer and game manager with a strong arm and deceptive quickness when scrambling. He currently has offers from BYU, UTSA and Louisiana-Monroe and had early offers from LSU and Texas, but the offers were from the program's old coaching staffs (Les Miles at LSU and
Charlie Strong at Texas).

Dinkelmann also is a player with solid football genes. His uncles are Ty and Koy Detmer. Ty won a Heisman Trophy at BYU in 1990 and played 14 years in the NFL with six teams, including the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. Koy was a record-setting passer at Colorado who played 11 years in the NFL with the Eagles and Minnesota Vikings.

His father is Johan Dinkelmann, who played tight end in college at Cincinnati and had a brief stint in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. His grandfather is Sonny Detmer, a high school coaching legend in South Texas and the current head coach at Somerset. His older brother is Stevie Joe Dorman, a 2011 Somerset graduate who held the greater San Antonio-area
career passing record (9,253 yards). He went on to sign with Colorado.

Sonny, Johan and Stevie Joe all are now a part of the Somerset coaching staff, doing their part to turn Zadock into the next big quarterback story in the family.

"It's a blessing. There's never a moment in practice where you can get away with doing the wrong things," Zadock said. "I go to family events, and we're talking football."

To add, Zadock's cousin is Koy Detmer Jr., the quarterback whose shoes he filled upon graduation from Somerset. Koy Jr. followed his uncle Ty's footsteps and now is at BYU. Ty is now the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at BYU.

Is there pressure? Perhaps. But Dinkelmann sees all the success from his family members and uses it as fuel. He's looking to improve on a junior season that included more than 1,900 passing yards and 21 touchdowns, according to Spectrum News.

From a recruiting perspective, Dinkelmann said he's looking to take spring and summer trips to BYU, UTSA and Pittsburgh. He also said he would love to return to Baylor, particularly after the two camp experiences he's had. Dinkelmann's first camp experience was during a summer before he played a down in high school.

"I was with the younger guys then, and they were coached by the GAs," he said. "I remember every pass I threw that day was on the money, and the GAs were going crazy.

"I went again when I was going into my sophomore year. That was better, because I got to throw with the senior group. I got to meet some of the coaches, and I had a good time."

Dinkelmann missed Baylor's junior day this year because of a previously scheduled family event. He said he hasn't heard much from the current coaching staff but is open to discussion and hoping to prove his worth with camp play this summer.

Dinkelmann said Baylor's been a school he's followed for a long time. When asked about Baylor's offense, he answered a question with a question.

"What's not to like?" he said. "When you watch the games, you're watching the offense, and the quarterback runs the show, no doubt. In that offense, it's noticeable what he does. That's the kind of offense I want to be put in."

Baylor's quarterback hunt includes athletes like Jalen Mayden, Tanner Mordecai and Gerry Bohanon. Dinkelmann would add intrigue to the race, and with his pedigree, he could be a guy Matt Rhule and his staff groom into a special talent in the Big 12.

"I want [an offer]," Dinkelmann said, "but we'll see what happens."
