Baylor sets up home-and-home series with Oregon in 2027 and 2028

Scrolling through Twitter a couple years ago to find Baylor would play Oregon was incredible. Pundits wouldn’t be able to knock Baylor’s non-conference schedule. The catch, it was on the court and not the gridiron.

Now it’s been announced, indeed the Bears and Ducks will square off on the field- you’ll just have to wait a decade to see it.

Per FB Schedules, Baylor and Oregon have scheduled a home-and-home series for 2027 and 2028 after signing a contract in January.

Baylor will play host on Sept. 11, 2027 for the Bears and Ducks first-ever meeting and will meet in Eugene on Sept. 9, 2028.

Of course, all of this is too soon to speculate how big an event either game will be. No one in the nation has a commitment beyond 2020. Depending on how well head coach Matt Rhule does in the first years of his contract, he’ll need an extension to be on staff for these showdowns as will Oregon coach Willie Taggart who signed a five-year deal in 2016 following the release of Mark Helfrich.

Still, it’s a matchup to get excited about at the moment considering Oregon and Baylor are the only schools to rank among the top five scoring teams four of the past six years. Both had a down season last year so it remains to be seen if the pedigree is kept up for the next decade.

If Oregon continues to slide, the cycle of Baylor having a weak non-conference schedule the nation berates the Bears for will continue. But there’s been a conscious effort to stop that trend.

While Baylor takes on cupcakes Liberty and UTSA to start the 2017 season, the Bears will travel to Durham, North Carolina to take on Duke, a matchup that sparked excitement a few years ago but has lost a bit of flavor. Duke finished as a top 25 team in 2013 and went to four consecutive bowl games from 2012-15 but went 4-8 last year.

In 2018, the pattern will continue with Duke visiting Waco. Baylor will keep UTSA on the schedule as an away game but will host new Division I program Abilene Christian. The Bears’ top non-conference opponents won’t start rolling in for a couple years.

Ole Miss has scheduled a neutral location game in Houston with Baylor in 2020 to kickoff the season. That will be followed by the first of a three-year high octane series with Louisiana Tech.

Baylor will also begin a two-year series with perennial Big 12 expansion favorite BYU in 2021 for the battle of the Baptists and Mormons. Following that series, the Bears will stay in Utah having secured a home-and-home series with the Utes to close out their non-conference schedules in 2023 and 2024.

The Bears have done their part scheduling more imposing teams than just Wofford and Northwestern State, now it’s up to the schedule to hold up its prestige so the intent turns into action.
