Postgame Takeaways: #4 Baylor, 74 KSU 49

Positives

  • Tremendous defense by the Bears holding KSU to 0.79 points per possession; 32% from the field; 22% from 3 point range
  • 21 assists on 29 buckets, unselfish basketball
  • At one point late in the game, I believe Baylor had a nearly +20 rebounding edge, they crushed KSU on the glass
  • Dale Bonner- elite decision making and court vision tonight
  • Jeremy Sochan gave his team a huge lift with his return, particularly on the defensive end
  • Shot-making by Flagler and Cryer.  Flagler had a strong floor game as well
  • Loved the activity by Kendall Brown (10 pts; 10 rebounds), Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua (13 pts; 12 rebounds) and Flo Thamba (4 pts; 3 rebounds; 3 blocks).  Jon in addition to the 3 pointer made a big boy post move to finish with his left hand.  I think he's going to be a weapon on the blocks by the end of the year.
  • Free throw defense (46%) elite!

Needs Work

  • LJ with 6 turnovers, a few of them very careless
  • Only 9-14 from free throw line including a front end miss of one and one by Flagler

Nothing notable about a Mayer?

Mayer did very little that was notable compared to the ones highlighted by Ashley, but I liked his game tonight. He played within himself and did a bit of everything, while yielding the stage to his teammates, for the most part. As a player earlier in his time at Baylor his engine ran hot but his hand was not always on the steering wheel, but as a senior he seems to understand both the game and his role in it, and when he is needed he shows up. i think we know his strengths, but he has worked on his weaknesses and it shows. I hope that the scouts are taking notice of his modesty on the floor and seeing it as the virtue that it has become. He has sacrificed his game to some extent, and it has improved the overall play of his teammates. I do not doubt that there will be games ahead when we need more from him offensively and I do not doubt that when that time comes he will provide it.

Have you noticed how many games Mayer has 0 turnovers in? He is averaging less than 1 turnover per game this season.

Please stop posting about Free Throw Defense. There is no such thing and we are never bad, or elite, at it.

This team is learning teamwork basketball, also called high IQ basketball. The scoring distribution, assists and involvement of all players was evident. Will Drew coach Achinjo to play high IQ basketball when he comes back, or allow him to return to ISO basketball? Brown woke up because Sochan was back, and he felt the chemistry again.

I'll post something positive about Matthew. He fights so hard for every rebound. And, his hair is cool (except when he gets a technical by tapping it).

I think Brown has looked much improved the last couple of games prior to Sochan coming back, but no doubt Jeremy makes everyone feel more comfortable. His ability to defend and pass over defenders is high level and when his offense gets back, watch out. He allows the floor to be spaced out to open up dribble drives for the 2 guards and Brown. Fully healthy this team is going to be a hard out in the tourney.

If only Drew knew how to coach and control achunjo, if only he knew how to coach teamwork basketball.

Mayer was terrific, big oversight. Great overall game from him

Could not agree more. He brings terrific energy to the floor. He is under appreciated since he isn't averaging 20 points a game.

free throw defense is just schtick for the record, I understand it is not a real thing

Akinjo (A-kin-jo)
Rhoades (Roads)
Tchatchoua (cha-chat-you-wah)
Sochan (So-han)
Mayer (My-er)

All deserve to have their names spelled and pronounced correctly

Seriously, the most ridiculous technical I have ever seen called. There needs to be a t-shirt made of that technical. More creative minds than mine can come up with a better thought than my idea of "don't T the mullet!"

I agree, I was mocking another poster. He is constantly bashing Akinjo in multiple threads, and won't even bother to spell his name correctly.
