Postgame Takeaways: Canada 69 Baylor (USA) 67

Baylor lost a hard fought battle against Canada 69-67 in the Global JAM games tonight in Toronto. Keyonte George led the Bears in scoring again with 19 points.  Jalen Bridges chipped in 13 and had 7 rebounds.

Positives

  • Tremendous defensive effort by Baylor holding a talented Canada team to 69 points and only 30% from the field while forcing 17 turnovers.
  • Baylor got a lot of practice on their free throw defense.  Team Canada went to the line 38 times to only 16 for the Bears.  This will prepare the team well for Allen Fieldhouse.
  • Dale Bonner had a rough shooting night (0-10) but his floor game (6 assists and 2 turnovers) and defense was strong.  He has logged nearly 70 minutes in 2 back to back games in a role he is not accustomed to.
  • Great to see contributions from Bridges (13 pts/ 7 rebounds/ 0 turnovers), Lohner (7 pts/ 4 rebounds/ 3 assists/ 0 turnovers).  These two forwards seem like a perfect fit for Scott Drew’s system.
  • Loved the energy tonight from Flo Thamba.  His touch was absent (4-11) but his effort was great (8 pts; 8 rebounds; 2 blocks; 2 steals).
  • Joshua Ojianwuna is going to be special.  He sets good picks, runs the floor hard, converts at the rim.  He will give us a lot of the same qualities that Everyday Jon gave us.
  • Good to see Jordan Turner make positive contributions with energy- 9 points and 2 rebounds.
  • Love the defense and poise of Dantwan Grimes.  I see some Davion Mitchell in him.  He will be a major asset for us.
  • Keyonte George had a rough shooting night which means he is probably due for a big game tomorrow against Brazil.  He ended up with 19 points but took 21 shots to get there.

Needs Work

  • Obviously need to do a better job rebounding, it is rare to see a Scott Drew team get outrebounded two games in a row.  Depth is a part of that.
  • Got sped up offensively tonight.  Guards ended up shooting 7-36 from the field.  We have guards that can get to their spots, just need to be patient.
  • Better job executing in crunch time.  Baylor was up 4 with 2 minutes left and allowed the game to get away.
