WACO, Texas -- The Baylor women’s tennis team will open its 2022 fall tournament schedule with the Lubbock 15K event in Lubbock, Texas, starting on Monday at the McLeod Tennis Center, hosted by Texas Tech.

Qualifying in singles will open on Monday and the first day of the singles main draw will continue on Tuesday. The singles draw will consist of 32 athletes and the doubles draw will feature 16 pairs.

“It’s been a good start to the semester and we can definitely see growth in many of the student-athletes,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “At the start of each season, it’s always an exciting process to establish a unifying purpose, set goals and create a team identity. No doubt that can be challenging to get all 10 players on same page and heading in the same direction for entire fall and spring season.

“I’m proud of the example that Paula Barañano, our super senior, and senior Isabella Harvison have set for this young squad. They are taking responsibility for their roles and supporting the younger players to keep moving in the right direction.”

The Bears are coming off a 16-win spring dual-match season that saw Baylor win six of nine Big 12 Conference matches.

Baylor – ranked No. 27 to end the season – fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at No. 7 Texas A&M. BU opened NCAA Tournament play with a 4-2 win over Washington.

It marked the 13th consecutive season head coach Joey Scrivano led the Bears to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament battle with Texas A&M saw Isabella Harvison post a 6-3, 6-2 win over the nation’s No. 8 player – and nation’s No. 2 junior – on court 1.

Harvison, a native of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., enters the fall tournament season ranked No. 72 in singles nationally by the ITA.

Alina Shcherbinina, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, earned a 25-5 record in singles and combined to go 19-7 in doubles.

A native of Mar Del Plata, Argentina, Paula Barañano went 21-8 in singles a year ago and combined for 16 wins in doubles. Anita Sahdiieva, a native of Khmelntskyi, Ukraine, had a 18-9 mark in singles and combined for 15 doubles wins.

Sahdiieva and freshman Vanda Vargova (Galanta, Slovakia) are slated to participate in the Lubbock 15K for the Bears.

A six-time Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year and a three-time ITA Texas Region Coach of the Year, Scrivano is in his 21st season with Baylor women’s tennis. He has led the Bears to two NCAA Final Four appearances, six NCAA Elite 8 berths, 11 regular-season Big 12 Conference Championships and eight Big 12 Tournament Championships.

Scrivano is assisted by Baylor great Lenka Broosova and volunteer assistant Patricia Martins, with Jacqui Haddock serving as the Baylor Director of Tennis Operations.
