On how he evaluates quarterbacks
“The ability to move the team. I would say the ability to make big plays without having destructive plays. All of the guys - Anu brings a bit of a running element, so does Charlie, Zach’s got a big-time arm. They’re all working at a high level.”
On concerns surrounding the offensive line
“The good news is I’m really pleased with all the offensive linemen, even the ones that might redshirt this year. I think in two or three years we’re gonna be a really, really strong offensive line. But they’re more ready than I thought…and I think Tecklenburg’s a really, really good offensive lineman.”
On the practice structure giving Sundays off
“When I was the head coach at Temple, I actually came down- I studied what coaches were doing here, what Briles was doing [inaudible]*. I started implementing Sundays off. I wouldn’t believe in Sunday off [before]. Then one day a week no practice, just sorta walk through. So I’ve been doing that from Baylor and just continuing to do that.”
*Note, it seems like Rhule was referring to something before the Briles days. The audio from Tuesday was interrupted right then.
On Coach Francis Brown’s importance
“I think Frans’ the best secondary coach in the country. He’s trained by Phil [Snow] who I think’s the best defensive coordinator, and that’s respect to all coaches but no one can reach a young person like Fran can. He took Nate Hairston [at Temple] who I tried to rescind his scholarship and kick him off the team. I moved him from wide receiver to DB cause I’m like, ‘Only Fran can save him.’ And Nate shows up at my house, drives, comes to Waco to see me. That’s how good Fran is. He took a receiver that I couldn’t even have on the team and turned him into an NFL corner.”
On Ish Wainright's development at tight end
“Sometimes when he's running you can tell he’s counting his steps, ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5,’ and that’s fine, you just want to make sure but eventually you want to get to the point where it’s automatic. He and Feuerbacer combined, I think we’ll have some [good production] there.”
On the leadership on the team
“Singling one out might not be fair. I think one person that I do want to make sure I do mention though, because I didn’t take him to Media Day, and he’s really come along since the middle of the summer is Maurice Porter. I think Mo’s been a guy that’s become a voice for the locker room. He’ll text me and ask me [inaudible] he’s in it”
