Breaking down the 2019 offers: Wide Receivers

When the 2019 Baylor recruiting class arrives on campus, Baylor’s current flock of talented young receivers will be program veterans. With a fairly large group on campus already (projecting around ten scholarship receivers on the roster for the 2019 season, give or take one or two), it’s difficult to anticipate how recruiting at the position will play out.

What cannot be disputed, though, is the amount of talent within the state of Texas at the receiver position for the 2019 cycle, and Baylor’s offer list already reflects this.

For all intents and purposes, Baylor is already out of the running for the first four wide receiver prospects offered in this class. For reference:

Kameron Brown, a 6-foot, 160-pound Colleyville Heritage product, was offered by the Bears on January 21 of this year.  The TCU legacy committed to the UCLA Bruins on August 24th.

The Bears’ next offer went out to Allen’s Theo Wease, Jr. on January 24. This 6-foot-2, 175-pound receiver has talent to spare, as reflected by his being named his district’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year in 2016. Wease has already committed and decommitted from Oklahoma and, while his recruitment appears to be far from over, he released a Top 14 list of programs and failed to include Baylor.

Like Kameron Brown, Baylor’s next offer, Arjei Henderson (Fort Bend Travis), is currently “off the board.” Brown (6-1, 180) was offered by Baylor in early February, left Baylor out of his Top 10, and then committed to Oregon at the end of July.

Another Baylor target who appears to be out of reach is Jalen Curry (St. Pius X). Curry (6-2, 180) picked up his Baylor offer in late February, then committed to Florida State on July 22nd.

Now, for some targets with whom Baylor is faring better on the recruiting trail:

Trejan Bridges (Hebron) was offered by Baylor on March 17. While the 6-foot-3, 174-pound target has yet to make it to Baylor’s campus, he released a Top 11 list of schools on August 1st and included the Bears. Bridges holds offers from the likes of Oregon, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, and Kansas, among others.

Baylor’s affinity for speedy, tall guys continues to be on display with the Bears’ next offer. Genson Hooper-Price (St. John’s) is a 6-foot-4, 196-pound dual-sport athlete who excels on the track. Baylor offered Hooper-Price on April 22 and, in doing so, became his very first offer. He has since picked up an offer from Duke, Iowa State, and Minnesota.

Baylor offered Lake Travis wide receiver Garrett Wilson (6-0, 170) on May 9. Wilson is an intriguing prospect, as he is also a talented basketball player who has been offered by Tennessee. Wilson has visited TCU in recent months, and a lone crystal ball prediction has him landing at Texas despite not yet having an offer from the Longhorns.

On June 15, Baylor offered and received a commitment from Cedar Ridge’s Jaylen Ellis. The 6-foot, 180-pound receiver caught the eye of Matt Rhule and his staff at a Baylor camp and the offer was extended just days later. Ellis is the lone commitment of the 2019 class for the Bears, and made it back to Waco at the end of July to visit campus, watch practice, and get to know a couple of other Baylor targets. At this time, Baylor is his only offer.

Langston Anderson (Midlothian Heritage) picked up a Baylor offer in late June. Anderson (6-2, 188) lived in Mississippi for three years, but is back in Texas and likely to blow up in the near future. His only other offer currently is Ole Miss.

Baylor is the only Power 5 offer for James Bowie High’s Elijah Higgins (6-2, 207), and he picked that offer up on July 22 following an impressive outing at Baylor’s final camp of the summer. Higgins also holds offers from SMU, Houston, and Rice.

Not a big deal. There are a lot of talented receivers in Texas, and history tells us that the top guys in HS don't often stay at the top in college. Rhule summarized it very well in one of the videos when he was soeaking to his players. Its what guys do with the natural talents they have that determine how much skill they develop and how much success they achieve.
