According to a report by John Elizondo News 4 in San Antonio, Baylor and UTSA's football game on Sept. 8 in San Antonio will be aired lived on an exclusive broadcast via Facebook.

According to Elizondo, the production of the game will be in the hands of the CBS Sports Network.

Part of the Conference USA, Baylor nor the Big 12 had a hand in the decison making process for the contest to be aired on Facebook.

Baylor opens the 2018 season against Abilene Christian on Sept. 1 at McLane Stadium at 7 p.m. CT. That contest will be aired live on Fox Sports Southwest.

Sad to say that Facebook is beating Amazon and Netflix to the table. I would much rather see those streaming services do this, as they have experience streaming high quality video which is hours in length. I've only seen FB stream cell phone & Web cam quality crap.
I'm curious, has Netflix ever streamed live content? I know Amazon has done it before.

I know YouTubeTV has some live sports coverage.

The problem is playing home and home with Conference USA. If we play at their house, they own the TV rights. CUSA Tier 1 rights have been sold to CBSSports Network. CBSS has a further contract to show some number of their games on Facebook.

The game will not look bad, it will use CBSS cameras, crews, on air talent. I don't know if FB has the streaming infrastructure in place, but I would presume they do.

The bad parts are 1) having to give up any information to FB/have an account/give them any permission to know anything about you 2) their constant efforts to get you to engage with the game (give them further information). Even if you're able to disable the flying emojiis that bubble up from the bottom with every like or dislike of a play (a point that is not entirely clear), you still won't escape the social media reporter. Its like a sideline reporter (a totally worthless concept in its own right unless total eye candy) except reporting, you know, the ever important social media aspects of the game.

I can see it now, "Coach, you're behind in positive tweets from female influencers in the 18 to 25 bracket, what half time adjustments do you need to make?"

I know the advanced stats guys will love it. "We only lost on points, we were ahead on social media."

True. I've seen there streaming... pretty good quality.
Still don't think Facebook will be a good fit for live games. I hope in wrong.

You don't have to have a FB account to watch. Just have someone post the streaming link and you're done if you're able to X out of the sign in and create an account at the beginning. I don't have an account on my phone but you can watch any video if you have the link.

I don't think the link thing would work with the FB video app on Apple TV, would require a browser. So I'd have to watch it on my phone or iPad and then Air Play mirror from my phone to the Apple TV. Think I'll just go old school with John and JJ. Might even listen to them over the air instead of streaming.

Anyway you look at it, it's a very stupid idea. Those who want to watch it but don't have Facebook (& don't want to) are out of luck. The only real alternative is to go see the game in person. But that's not an option for many people.

I'm glad I'll be there.

Think of the upside........when we lose (almost) no one will hear about it.

On social media, no one can hear you scream.

Nuke it from orbit.

Just ran across this tidbit...interesting

Facebook owns exclusive rights to the World Surf League, so I've watched live events pretty regularly on it.

Don't really have any complaints about it. You can hide the comments/reactions and hook it up to the TV so it's just like watching a sporting event on any other app.

Man wouldn't it be great if we could watch football on Facebook? Said no one ever.

It's an idea right up there with those video games from a few years ago mounted over urinals that were controlled by your "stream".

Wait. That was a thing? Best. Idea. Ever. Just call me the whizzinator!

How exactly does it work? Like how do you get to the page streaming the game? Do you just search "baylor utsa football" on facebook? Or how do you get there?

For the WSL, you just have to go to their Facebook page. If there is a live event, then it's streaming on their page.

You can also follow their page (which I do) and request notifications for when their stream goes live. That way when a pro surfing event starts I get a notification on my phone, iPad, etc. to go to their Facebook page.
