Brought a lot of energy to the games
Where Have You Gone Josie Drago?
Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson turned their eyes to Joe DiMaggio and Baylor Nation turned their ears to Josie Drago.
Looking back, Drago earned a bit of cult following with her "Beats By Drago" brand among younger Baylor alums and students around 2013. Always ready to energize the crowd with the right song, mix, or bass drop Drago's brand grew to levels where all knew her name.
After July 2016 Drago left for another role at the University of Houston. She's since left UH and moved into private business.
SicEm365 reached out to Ms. Drago to talk about her time at Baylor and what she's doing now.
Brian Ethridge: You presided over what many saw as the golden age of Baylor football. What year did you start at Baylor and how did that come about?
JD: I started in August 2012, but didn't do music. I remember beating KSU and it was crazy. I was the person in the back room picking the best tweets to be on the jumbotron. The person playing music that game left after 2012. Before the 2013 season, John Garrison asked if she wanted to play music at the football games and I said, "Heck yeah!" I also did baseball and volleyball in 2012-15 and men's basketball in 2015. I left in July of 2016.
BE: Baylor alums haven't been known for dancing at games. What did you feel was the initial reaction by the fans?
JD: From what I remember, the game against KSU, Collin Klein, "Jump Around" was played around six times. That was the game the alums bought in. Then in 2013 it took a little bit to figure out what the fans wanted. By conference I had a good idea. "Started From The Bottom" was a huge hit. If you're playing music the players are dancing to, you usually have a good song. I had to edit them down a bit.
BE: As time went by, when did you realize how much of the production you had become? People were coming to the games to see what you'd play next.
I didn't really realize it, but when someone told me I was on BaylorFans I started to realize I was doing a good job. Kellen Coleman came up with BeatsByDrago. He came up with it in 2014 and then I started live tweeting the songs. Putting the song lists on Spotify.
BE: What was your favorite moments during your Baylor years?
1. Nothing can top TCU game in 2014.
2. First blackout game at Floyd Casey.
3. First game at McLane agaist SMU
4. Closing down Floyd Casey against Texas. I'd bought my plane ticket to (the game).
5. KSU in 2012
Non-football moments
1. A&T hosting and winning the national championship
2. Rico Gathers hit a 3 and the place went crazy.
BE: What is on your current playlist?
Ashamed to say my guilty pleasure is Cardi B. Moving to Houston, I listen to Beyonce. A song that has been stuck in my head, Keke. I'm looking up first dance songs now for my wedding. Big Taylor Swift fan, not gonna lie.
