Big 12 Power Rankings: After Week 3

September 19, 2018

Ranking the Big 12 from top to bottom based on the results of the games in week three of the 2018 college football season.

Previous: Week 1 | Week 2

1. Oklahoma (3-0)

W - 37-27 over Iowa State

Previous: 1

A road test at Iowa State is never easy and Oklahoma handled business despite giving up 27 points to the Cyclones a week after they scored three against Iowa. Kyler Murray had the best day of his career and the Sooner defense limited ISU on the ground, but backup QB Zeb Noland threw for 360 yards on 25-of-36 passing.

2. West Virginia (2-0)

Canceled vs. NC State

Previous: 2

West Virginia's game was canceled because of Hurricane Florence. They are set to face Kansas State this weekend in their first Big 12 test.

3. Oklahoma State (3-0)

W - 44-21 over Boise State

Previous: 3

Arguably the most impressive victory for the Big 12 this season, Oklahoma State kicked three field goals and scored a touchdown on blocked punt for 16 of their points while the defense held BSU's running game in check. However, Boise QB Brett Rypien threw for 380 yards and three scores in the contest which should give OSU fans some heartburn.

4. TCU (2-1)

L - 40-28 to Ohio State

Previous: 4

TCU played well against Ohio State, but a loss is still a loss and it was hard to move the Frogs up the list with the teams ahead of them winning or not playing. Sophomore QB Shawn Robinson was limited on the ground, but could be finding something more in the passing game as far as consistentcy despite two interceptions. TCU averaged 5.6 yards per carry for 203 yards in the game, but 93 of those game on one first-half TD run.

5. Texas (2-1)

W - 37-14 over USC

Previous: 7

The biggest movers on the list this week are the Longhorns. It was a 16-14 game at the half, but Texas pulled away in the third quarter, scoring the final 21 points of the of the game and shutting out the Trojans in the final three quarters. Sam Ehlinger still struggled (15 of 33 passing for 223 yards) and Texas couldn't find a running game (3.3 yards per carry), but their defense dominated up front as the Trojans totaled -5 yards rushing.

6. Texas Tech (2-1)

W - 63-49 over Houston

Previous: 7

The thought that Texas Tech's defense would be drastically improved is proving to be a myth, but the offense is proving to be as potent as ever after another 63 points were scored on Saturday against Houston. Freshman QB Alan Bowman completed 43 of 59 passes for 605 yards and 5 TDs while freshman running back Ta'Zhawn Henry scored four times on the ground.

7. Iowa State (0-2)

L - 37-27 to Oklahoma

Previous: 5

Iowa State is still looking for their first win of the season, but the Cyclones still have 10 games to go. The Cyclones put up 447 yards of offense against Oklahoma after a lackluster offensive performance against Iowa in their first game while back up QB Zeb Noland torched the Sooner secondary.

8. Kansas State (2-1)

L - 41-17 over UTSA

Previous: 9

Kansas State bounced back from their blowout loss to Mississippi State a week ago with a solid victory over UTSA. The Wildcats but up 449 yards of offense with Skylar Thompson leading the way through the air and on the ground, accounting for 279 passing and rushing yards and three of KSU's five scores.

9. Baylor (2-1)

L - 40-27 to Duke

Previous: 9

A strong close to the game against Duke wasn't enough to overcome an abysmal start. Baylor scored 20 offensive points and returned a blocked punt for a score (the first since 2004) in the second half, but the 23-0 halftime deficit was too much to overcome.

10. Kansas (2-1)

W - 55-14 over Rutgers

Previous: 10

Riding high after their first P5 victory since 2016, Kansas looks to have found an explosive running game in the form of freshman back Pooka Williams Jr. In two games this season, Williams has rushed for 283 yards on 32 carries with three touchdowns. On the opposite side of the ball Kansas is the best in the country in forcing turnovers, including six in their game against Rutgers.

This is overall a good list, but if it is based on on field results, until Baylor proves they beat Kansas I would have to have them tied for ninth place with Kansas. They beat a P5, we haven't.

"They" will beat another P5 school this Saturday I would guess...at least I will be surprised if BU can beat them at this point. Then all will be in the right order...and the BOR will say "AMEN!"

I'm not knocking the list, outside of not having the Bears last or tied for last it is pretty spot on. We have the right to be homers, but the Bears have shown nothing this year.

So far the Bears wins have been 6A Texas HS vs 3A Texas HS, and I'm not talking the Newton,Texas version of 3A either. Those boys could kick some ass. Newton has 3 kids committed to TCU, that's all I need to know about how tough they are.

We are bad, and at this point in the season we deserve to be #10 on the list, from an objective standpoint. Is there hope because of talent on the roster? Yes. But i believe with this kind of coaching, unless something major changes, we will be very lucky to even claw our way up to #9 on this list.
