Men's Tennis Dominates Season-Opening Doubleheader

WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis (2-0) opened a new era Friday afternoon and clinched 7-0 victories against Prairie View A&M and UT Arlington for its first wins under head coach Brian Boland.

With its win over PVAMU, the Bears are 23-1 in home openers dating back to 1996 and have won 18 of their last 19 home matches dating back to the 2017 season.

MATCH ONE: Baylor 7, Prairie View A&M 0
The Bears opened the match in dominant fashion and jumped out to quick leads on all doubles courts. Constantin Frantzen and Matias Soto opened it up with a quick 6-0 triumph over Kevin Ugarteche and Zachary Suico at the No. 3 spot.

Then, Johannes Schretter and Will Little clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 win over Taqel Lewis and Rodrigo Yoshikata on court two. Third-ranked Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah were up 5-0 on court one before the match was abandoned.

In singles action, 105th-ranked Frantzen claimed his first victory as a ranked player with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Zachary Suico at the No. 5 spot. Soto then took a 6-1, 6-1 win against Rodrigo Yoshikata on court two, and Kyrylo Tsygura clinched the match and his first Baylor victory with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 showing over Taqel Lewis on court four.

Bendeck followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Kevin Ugarteche at the No. 6 spot. 17th-ranked Little collected his 6-2, 6-0 win over Xavier Lawrence at the top of the lineup, and Lah closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Jorge Juarez on court four.

MATCH TWO: Baylor 7, UT Arlington 0
The Bears fell behind early on courts two and three while Roy Smith and Lah rolled on court one with a 6-0 victory over Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Rio. Down 5-4, Constantin Frantzen and Matias Soto won their second match of the day with a 7-5 triumph over Alejandro Hayen and Miguel Cabrera at the No. 3 spot for the doubles point.

In singles action, the Bears took all six opening sets and rolled with Bendeck’s 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot, followed by Lah’s 6-0, 6-0 win on court four. Schretter clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Enrique Pardo at the No. 2 spot.

Finishing out the rest of the matches, Matias Soto earned his second singles win of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mauricio Rio on court three, and then 105th-ranked Frantzen closed out Miguel Cabrera in exciting fashion, 6-3, 7-6(2).

Roy Smith made it a clean sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Guanarteme Nuez at the top of the lineup.
